Hi ladies,
I currently go to a practice in Voorhees, right next to Virtua. I have had an "ok" experience with them thus far but I often feel extremely rushed and confused after leaving visits. Plenty of friends have delivered at Virtua and they had so-so birth experiences. As I learn more, I feel wary and thinking that I would like a less invasive experience- one where I feel more comfortable and that the doctor is invested in the birth. I also have vestibulitis, a nerve disorder in the vaginal area, and my doc currently doesn't really address it at all when I bring up the idea that I am concerned about a vaginal delivery and what I can do to lessen the possibility of tearing. I'm just starting to look into midwifes, I have no idea if my insurance covers it, etc. I live in Haddon Heights and would love any advice or suggestions on where to seek information. Thank you
Re: New to board-Contemplating midwife, different hospital experience
I see the doctors of OBGYN Care of Southern New Jersey. They are located in Lindenwold which may seem far but it's really not that bad. Just a short trip down White Horse Pike. They are affiliated with Virtua Voorhees. I delivered in October and had a high risk pregnancy. I saw so many doctors and specialists and I never had a single bad experience with any of them. I cannot recommend them enough.

Most big practices also have midwives. I used a midwife with my first and I loved her, but she left the state =(
You can just look up local practices and call to see if they have any midwives.
As for your concerns, I don't know about the condition you described, but a midwife can only be used in the most routine of births. If there is any chance of a c-section or high risk birth, the midwife has to pass you off to an OB.
You could always try a new hospital. I only deliver at Kennedy and I LOVE it there. All private rooms, really nice staff, some birthing suites have whirlpool tubs so you can labor in the water, and the facility is almost brand new. It may be a bit of a hike for you to go to Washington Twp, though.
Good luck. It's very important to find an OB or midwife that you are comfortable with!
Thank you for your responses. First of all, Lilylow and Larrysdarling, I remember you both from my Knot days, we were on the same board, I don't remember which but I read your posts a lot. Fun!
This is such a tough choice. I hate changing practices but I really want to feel comfortable with my doc's. Does a midwife work along with a doc when in a hospital setting or on her own? I am not interested in a home birth, I am just interested in a less invasive birth in a hospital- where all the choices are not totally out of your hands. I still need to find out what my insurance covers too- Not sure if a midwife adds onto the cost?
thanks again!
Ditto, Lily.
I go to Women's Healthcare of Mullica Hill and delivered at Elmer. I see the CNM, but she works very closely with the OB, who I saw now and then throughout my pregnancy.
Elmer is very very helpful in pursuing a more natural birth. They aren't pushy, but each room has its own whirlpool tub and they have wireless monitoring so you can move around if you don't get an epi.
That said, they don't do super high-risk because they don't have a high-end NICU, so I'm not sure if your condition would exclude you or not.
