I just thought I would take a moment to send a word of encouragement to all in bumpieland regarding second-guessing the pedi. I guess this really relates both to mommy guy and to being an informed patient/parent.
If you think your pedi (or your own doc) might be wrong about something or is going down the wrong path, do not be afraid to seek a second opinion. Do your research about what they say is wrong and be prepared with questions.
We just went through quite an ordeal with the pedi thinking my DS had something based on bloodwork. I read a lot and knew enough to ask about a blood test they did not order. I felt like a terrible person, questioning his medical opinion, but we are lucky he did not take offense. When he did not know the answers, he was not afraid to say so and referred us to a specialist for the extra test. The specialist confirmed for us that my DS is in perfect health and that no treatment is necessary.
I am very confident in my pedi's care and concern for my son. He is a wonderful person and a fantastic doctor. They cannot know everything, though. Follow your mommy gut, stay up on your reading, and advocate for your child!!!
Re: Don't be afraid to question the pedi
I want to ditto this, and I want to say that if you aren't satisfied w/ the answers, then push to get more help, to have someone else look at your child.
We actually had the opposite experience. DS was sick and not getting better and we couldn't figure out the problem. Ultimately, he has Celiac disease. But it wasn't until I broke down on the phone that finally someone else was pulled in and we got the answers we needed.
(This wasn't fault of our actual pedi. She was on leave during this time. I blame their NP and the doctor she was "consulting" with.).
We truly are our childs advocates and we have to fight for what we feel is right when it comes to their health.
