Re: Ugggg....reflux. Nothing helps!

  • My dr. told me to take Prevacid, and for the most part, that has helped me (after trying Tums, Pepcid, etc.)  I've also really limited what I eat prior to bed (so I have a tiny dinner around 7 and go to bed around 10/10:30) and sleep pretty propped up.

  • I'm sorry nothing is helping! I take 150mg of Zantac twice a day and if I miss a dose my reflux is so bad I start puking.  My OB said I could take a few Tums with it as well for extra help but if the Zantac stopped working she'd call in Rx stuff that is safe for pregnancy.  I'd call your OB and see what other suggestions they have to help because it's awful!

  • The meds haven't really helped me at all.  I have horrible reflux when not pregnant, and it's just magnified now.  The only thing that works is a glass of milk, but that's a temporary band-aid.  It helps though when I'm desperate for relief.  I've got chewable Gaviscon on hand too which is somewhat helpful.

  • What does your dr say? Are you taking Zantac (or another med) twice a day? Are you taking RX-strength? Per my dr, I am now doing Zantac twice a day and still have some discomfort, but overall the nausea and vomitting have gone down, as has my nasty cough which he now thinks was from bile spilling over and inflaming my airway.

He also said to avoid chocolate, caffeine,  alcohol (if you are having any) and mint which relax the muscles that keep bile in making it come up more easily. Avoid spicy foods and anything with citric acid (including orange juice). I tried papaya enzyme, but it did nothing for me. Other things the dr said: sleep semi-sitting, do small meals through the day, don't eat within 3 hours of laying down, exercise before eating not after.

  • As I am reading this I have heartburn.  So sick of it.  Just took a few tums.  Hope they are going to work.  Had a horrible nights sleep becasue of it.
  • Thanks ladies, i already sleep propped up and have been taking pepcid twice a day. i have noticed that a big glass of milk with help for a very short period of time but it is just not enough relief. I eat small meals and nothing spicy. I have my 37 week appt tomorrow so i am going to talk to my doc about it, i just wanted to see if some of you ladies had any ideas of something that might work:) I am sitting at my desk at work miserable right now!

  • Try chewing gum after every meal...it helps to disolve the acid. Sometimes a handful of plain almonds will do the trick too. I've done the vinegar routine a few times as well. Some swear by Vinegar and Baking Soda.

  • I had terrible reflux until about a week ago. I had read about the almonds, and they actually seemed to help a bit!

The only thing that gave me relief at night was sleeping in an almost sitting position. DH literally piled 4 pillows up for me, I had my body pillow on my side and sometimes another one underneath by back! Needless to say, I never was excited to go to bed Sad

I'm hoping that your LO drops for you, because that was my saving grace.
