I have finally seen enough. Since DS was born I have seen some car seats that were very obviously installed wrong--wiggling around on the seat, infant seats facing forward- but today was the worst one. I pulled up to a light next to another car where they had an infant in an infant seat that was placed side ways on the back seat- not straped down!! It took everything I had not to roll down my window to yell at them. I came home and told DH that car seats should be like tires--you can only get them at car dealerships and must be professionally installed ONLY. I know this isnt entirely realistic but I cannot imagine why people would put their babies in such jeopardy!
Re: vent- car seats need to be professionally installed
a lot of people don't know they don't have them in right, that's the problem. most people wouldn't make the choice to knowingly put their child in jeopardy.
even if car seats were like tires, a lot of people would still install them themselves. I don't think my dad ever had a mechanic put a tire on his car.

I would have called the police hotline and given them the license number of that car and the general direction that it's heading in. I've done that before and watched as the cop pulled the car over, ticketed the parent, and installed the car seat correctly. But I live in a fairly small town and there always seems to be a cruiser every couple blocks.
I don't think I could live with myself if I saw that and said or did nothing.
From a professional standpoint (I'm a certified child passenger safety technician), I agree that ALL parents should have an expert help them with their car seat installations. That's what I do
But I dontdo it for them. I am an educator and my job is to teach parents how to do it themselves. The best way to protect children in cars is to make sure their primary caregivers know how to properly install and use their seats.
