Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

BFing questions for you toddler moms

How frequently do you nurse after your babies are year old? When did you wean? Just wondering what to expect for the year to come.

Re: BFing questions for you toddler moms

  • I pretty much nurse on demand, but if DD is busy and not tired, she usually nurses every 4 - 5 hours. I nurse about 4 times a day. We are planning on weaning at 18 months but may go to 24 months.....I don't know how to wean. DD demands the boobies. (She can say boobies and screams it when she wants milk).

  • I started supplementing at 10 mo. I completely weaned at just over 12 months. Those last 2 months I just slowly reduced until I was at one BF session before bed. I think it was easier on both of use to do it slowly. I had no set plan for how long I would BF, but at that point he would no longer BF for one session; there were lots of starts/stops, playing, etc. That is when I knew it was time.

  • I just weaned my daughter recently (her choice sadly) but I was only really nursing her in the morning and then for naptime and bedtime. So two or three sessions and other than that she would drink her soy milk or water.

  • DS will be 20 months this week and he only nurses and drinks water from a sippy.*meaning we haven't given him cows milk*  For me being a SAHM DS nurses whenever he wants.  It seem to slow down a bit for me after 16 months and now DS nurses 4-5 times a day.  It really depends on what we are doing.  If we are busy he only nurses when he needs to.  If we are home he likes to nurse for a second then stop then come back later.  ha! He still nurses during the night and I think that is because we co-sleep.  But DS enjoys nursing and I plan to go until he self-weans or 2.5.  GL! :)

  • My son is 16 months old and we are down to three sessions (first thing in the morning, before nap, and before bed). If he is teething or is sick there may be another. Some people at a year drop down to 2 (morning/night) and use milk for the rest. DS does have milk sippies with his meals now, but also nurses 3x/day.
  • DD self weaned at 13 months and for the last month or so she only really wanted to be nursed when she first woke up and when she was going to bed. I'd try and nurse her at naptime too but she wasn't interested. Once she went down to only wanting to be nursed at bedtime I decided to just fully wean.
  • I nurse whenever she wants, but lately it's been once in the morning, once before bed, and once sometime in the afternoon. Sometimes she'll skip the afternoon one, and sometimes she'll be super clingy and want to nurse all day. She just recently (as in, the past 2 weeks) night-weaned herself, thank goodness. I think she would be nursing more often, but my supply is VERY low right now due to my pregnancy. I'm sure she'll pick it back up once the baby is born and she'll want to nurse every time she sees me nursing #2.

I don't know when I plan on weaning. Not really thinking about it at this point.

  • We are at 3-4 times.  Before nap, before bed, and once or twice at night.  If she STTN, we nurse when she wakes up, but otherwise she isn't interested.  I could probably wean her--she's always just nursed for hunger and never comfort.  She's never been one to noticeably want to nurse.  However, I LOVE the snuggles and I know she'll wean herself in a few months so I don't rush it.  Also, if I have class and my DH puts her to bed, she goes to sleep fine without it.  He just gives her a sippy of whole milk.  So I think after a year, you can be really flexible with how and when you want to nurse.
  • At almost 23mos we nurse upon wake up & bed time during the week. On weekends it ranges from 2-4 times per day depending on how busy we are.

  • Usually 4 times a day and once at night (but the night feeding is down to 1 side so he'll probably drop it soon). He's teething canines right now so sometimes he wants an additional session, mostly for comfort.

  • Usually 5 times a day - wake up, before nap, after lunch, after dinner, and before bed. However, our situation may be a bit different because DD can't have dairy, so for now breast milk is her ONLY milk. Once she'll take another kind of milk I imagine our nursing sessions will be reduced to morning and night.

  • I still nurse on demand. I would say it averages 4-6 times a day and she still nurses a few times at night too.

  • Im really glad you posted this as I am always wondering if I nurse DS too much or too little. We are still at about 4 times a day. Morning, before two naps and before bed. However, he nurses for like 10 seconds on one side and the rest on the other.

I have not done whole milk yet and no need as Im a SAHM. But Im KU so we shall see how the pregnancy goes with nursing.

  • At 12 months DS was nursing 3-4 times a day, and now by 14.5 months, he dropped his daytime nursing and only nurses at night and in the morning.  I kinda did don't offer/don't refuse, but I also work 3 days a week and once DH started giving him sippy cups of cow's milk he stopped asking to nurse so much during the day.  I don't know if I ever plan on weaning since he goes back to sleep for an hour or two in the am after nursing and I love that time to get some more sleep in.
  • I work and DD is at daycare. I weaned her during the day by dropping one feeding at a time. So by 13 months she wasn't nursing at all during the day (with some very occasional exceptions, like this weekend she came looking to nurse after a scary Santa Claus visit).

Up until last week; she was nursing at bedtime, several times overnight and in the AM. I had tried to night wean about two months ago and it was a disaster and I gave up on it. But last week, she dropped her bedtime nursing ok her own. She had been growing more interested in reading books before bed and was starting to forget to ask to nurse. On a whim, I tried not nursing st night and patting her or giving her a sippy of water when she woke up and to my surprise it worked. She was night weaned in a night, it was just about picking the right time. So, we nurse once at 5am. That buys me two more hours of sleep, so Im in no rush to stop that. I do suspect we'll add some nursings when her canines and two year molars come in. She's always been a big comfort nurser when teething.

  • It actually seems like DS nurses more now than he did a few months ago. He's been getting some new teeth, which I'm sure is part of it, but it also seems to be that he figured out that he could "ask," and now he wants a sip here and there throughout the day.  Asking is in quotes because right now it consists of pulling at my shirt and whining, but we're working on signing and using words.

I don't really care when he weans (unless he doesn't figure out how to not bite and pull with these new teeth), but I a little less frequently would be nice.  I do try to offer a sippy of milk first when he asks to nurse, but it never really seems to do the trick.  He has gone 6 hours in the day without nursing, and if I could be really exciting all of the time he'd probably forget to ask, but I don't have it in me :)

  • At 12 months we were nursing/pumping 4 times a day.  We had an OOT wedding to go to so after that, it was pretty easy to go down to 3 times and then to 2 times a day.  I really wanted to get down to 2 times - bedtime and wake-up because then I could stop pumping at work.  Now I only have to pump about twice a week on the nights I work past her bedtime.
  • At 1 year we went down to morning, naptime and bed.  By 15 months we were down to morning and bedtime.  Now the morning nursing session is about half the time.  Some days he just isn't interested and wants to get up and go.  Other days he's super whiny until he nurses and then he's better.

He would probably be ok weaning entirely, but the doctor is watching is weight gain so I'd rather keep nursing to get the extra calories in him until he is on some sort of consistent growth curve.  He does milk and pediasure out of a sippy during the day.  A good day of cow's milk intake is 2 cups.  Normally is it around 1 or so.  I make sure he gets at least one yogurt a day for the calcium and other nutrients.

  • Cedric is down to nursing before nap and before bedtime.  If he wakes up before morning I nurse him to get him back to bed again.  He pretty much did this on his own, with only little convincing to not nurse more.
