Parenting after a Loss

Do you think this is ridiculous?

My DH's best friend's wife was telling the story of how she ended up going to the same college as we did.  Basically her parent's told her that was the only college they would pay for since they are both alumni.  I think that is crappy.  DH and I went to the same college and are HUGE fans but if DD wanted to go to our college's rival school we would still pay for it - seeing as how they are both state schools.

Anyone else think it is ridiculous for a parent not to pay for their child's college for this reason?

  • My parents support any decision I make.  I'm pretty sure they would support me if I wanted to go to a different school than they went to!

  • That's pretty intense. I had to stay in state but I'm sure if there would've been a school I had my heart set on they would've helped it happen.

  • My DW's father was a professor and alumni of Oxford, and he paid for all 5 of his kids' college educationg, even though only one went to Oxford (my wife and all her brothers have ivy league educations.....make my "where-is-that-even-at schooling" feel sad)  But hey, and education is an education, is an education....doesn't matter where you go!  My DD wants to go to Virginia Commonwealth....the one place she doesn't want to go is Harvard....she's "not her mom"

If your kid WANTS to go to school, why are you going to stop them?

  • If DS wants to be an Aggie, we'll get over it and support him. Wink

But I hope he wants to be a Longhorn.

As long as he's not a Sooner, right?!

  • Life is about NFL, not NCAA......as long as my kids arent Cowboy or Eagle fans! :P
  • I had to pay for my own (super expensive) college. My parents helped some, but not much, but at 10 grand a semester, I can't blame em! It didn't matter to them where I went! I have to say, however we help our kids with school will be decided long before they actually choose a school, unless they have it figured out by the time they are 5 or something! Let's just hope they don't want to go to a big Husker rival!

  • We'll support DD wherever she wants to go... but support does not mean pay for 100% of costs. Heck, by the time DD does go to college, I will probably still have five years left on my federal student loans. My education costs more than our mortgage each month. And for those that don't know, veterinarians make significantly less than our human counterparts.
