bleeding umbilical cord ...

today my father was helping out and changed LO's diaper. well he wound up pulling down too fast on the onesie and caught DS umbilical stump and it started bleeding. Its not bleeding anymore, just really red Sad i feel so bad for the lil guy. my question is, do i still go ahead and clean the area with alcohol (wouldnt that burn?) or do i just wipe it clean with warm water? idk what to do now...

Re: bleeding umbilical cord ...

  • We had this happen and I still used the alcohol pad- didn't phase LO a bit.  I also put a call in to the doc, so had us come in and used silver nitrate to kill the blood supply so the stump would fall off faster- she said it bled because it was barely hanging on there, so she just "helped" it a bit.

  • I used water when this happened to my daughter this week.  I tried alcohol first, but she didn't like it.
  • My LO's bled after it fell off- pedi had us keep it dry and use a q-tip w/ some rubbing alcohol on it to clean it out once a day; the alcohol will dry it out faster.  Just in the bellybutton, not the stump itself.

  • I didn't clean anything for DD's umbilical cord until after it fell off. We were just instructed to keep it dry and fold down diapers in the hospital. Her stump fell off the day before her pedi appointment and he instructed to keep it clean when it bled or had discharge with rubbing alcohol and a q tip and that is could bleed for up to 2-3 weeks. She still bleeds on occasion but it has mostly just looked like a belly button.
