I have been EBF my LO since birth, and when we got home from the hospital, I started using the my brest friend pillow which has been so great! The only problem now is that I feel reliant on it. I'm not sure how to cradle LO at the right height and angle to feed with out it. It would be nice to leave the pillow at home if we are going out for the day- plus she is getting bigger each day and will eventually outgrow it! For anyone that has used the pillow, when did you stop? And do you have any tips on positioning baby so she and I are both comfy? TIA for any help!
Re: My Brest Friend pillow-when to stop?
I stopped using my Friend pillow at about 2months. She had gotten larger so I could set her in my lap more for feedings comfortably...and we were getting out and about more, so it was just easier to hold her in my arms instead of bringing pillows everywhere. Plus I was just sick of wrapping it on every feeding :P
when i'm home i still use the boppy 90% of the time (the other 10% i just use another pillow) but if i go somewhere i can feed LO with no pillow (if i'm at the mall) or if i'm at my parents i just use another pillow.
It takes some practice, at first i would use my jacket, purse or rolled up blanket to help if i was at the mall.
Probably not the one to ask since I found the MBF pillow to be a total torture device. I could NOT figure out how to use it comfortably at all -- that stupid back piece -- what in the WORLD do you guys do with it? I stopped using it on day two and breastfeeding has been so much easier.
As for holding your baby without it, there are a few different options. I am a fan of the good old fashioned cradle hold. Just nestle the baby's head in the crook of your elbow and rest your forearm on an incline down into your lap and lay your baby there.
If your baby is at least 2-3 months and can sit, you can try the "australian hold" (there are several different names). Let the baby straddle your thigh facing you and breastfeed sitting up. Good for developing neck support, too!
Thanks for the advice ladies!
As for the how to use it question, a lactation consultant told me to get one. She had one at my appointment and showed me how to feed her on it reclining back (I have over supply and let down quickly so reclining back helped slow the flow). I just strap the pillow on tightly and lay baby across on her side so her mouth is parallel with my nipple. My LC said many people make the mistake of wearing the pillow too low-it should be right under the breasts and it has to be on tightly to create tension to hold the weight of the baby securely
I love MBF - I seriously bring it with me when I go out. It allows me hands free feeding. I CAN feed her in a cradle hold walking around shopping if necessary, but most of the time it's not necessary and we both just get comfy on the MBF.
The way I use it, I don't see her growing out of it.

hmm good question...i also used it for most feedings in the beginning but i only use it at night now. it's helpful when they're so small and they need to be held high up to your chest, but when they're a little bigger it's easier.
i nurse her everywhere in the house. if i'm on the couch, i bring both my feet up onto the couch and bend one knee to use to prop my arms and her head up and put her bottom on my other leg. if i'm sitting on the floor, i just lean back against the wall and bring both my knees towards me and put her in the crevice and nurse her that way. sometimes i nurse her while walking around lol. don't worry, you'll just find ways that are comfortable for you.
