Baptism

We are having DS baptized in January and I do not know the etiquette (sp?) for the ceremony.

Do you send out invitations or just word of mouth to family and friends?

Do you do a party or meal afterward?

How do I ask the people if they will be the Godparents? How many Godparents do you choose? Do you get them a gift?

Do you get LO a gift?  If so what?

Thanks!

Re: Baptism

  • Our LO's baptism will be this month. Were just sending out evites to the family and a couple friends. We'll be having a meal afterward - since it will be the day after Christmas, were combining our big family gathering with the baptism so doing a typical Christmas meal that we would do with the family. I called my sister and asked if she and her husband to be the godparents...I wasn't planning on getting them a gift but I'll probably put a pic from the baptism in a nice frame afterwards for them. I'm not getting LO a gift - my dad is a minister and will be baptizing her so I know there will be a certificate type thing we'll be given plus the linen to dry her head off and I think that'll be good enough for keepsakes from it.

  • I send out invitations, but they are not required. I served lunch afterwards for DS, and plan to do the same for DD. Most everyone attending the baptism is coming from OOT, so I don't want them to leave hungry.

As far as asking the godparents, I just asked them while pregnant. I picked two godparents, and yes, I got them an engraved picture frame.

I didn't get LO a gift, I figure the party afterwards is enough. DS got tons of gifts from relatives.

  • when ds1vwas baptized we sent out invites w/ time location and address of church.  we had a small get together at a restaurant afterwards w/ lunch and cake. we just asked my brother and sil to be godparents, we didnt do anything special, just asked.  we only had one godfather/mother.  at our church they had to both be catholic.  i meant to get them gifts, but didnt.  we put some $ in ds's college account for his "gift".
