Babies: 0 - 3 Months

when to bathe everyday?

Our LO is 3.5 wks old, and we have been bathing her typically once every three days, as her skin gets sooo dry (even with lotion) after a bath.  Her skin is starting to get better now, so I think we're going to move to every night in order to help get her settled for bed.  Is there a particular age when everyday baths are okay, or does it just depend on your LO?

Re: when to bathe everyday?

  • Her skin is dry because of the lotion. You shouldnt lotion a baby till they are 2+ months.

  • I just started being consistent with the every day bath. It helps her sleep better. She is almost 8 weeks.

  • We started bathing every night at 2 weeks old. DD had really dry skin to but the pedi said it would be there regardless of whether or not we bathed her or not because she is so new. so their skin needs time to get the moisture back in due to the vernex. We use it as a bed time routine and I also feel like I HAVE to clean my DD everyday. I'm anal like that lol.

  • We still don't bathe my 22 month old DD every day.  She gets a bath about every other day or every 3 days.  And the twins... well we bathe them about once every 4 days right now or when they spit up or have a diaper blowout.  Giving LO a bath every night will dry his/her skin out even more.
  • We bathe every night as part of bedtime, but only use gentle baby wash every second or third night.  I use night time lotion every night, but will alter either legs or arms or belly, just so he has that smell associated with bed time, but not drying him out.

Um. No.  WhoTF said that?  A gentle, baby lotion is fine from birth.

It's getting cooler.  Cooler air doesn't have as much moisture.  The other reason is that some newborns shed some of their skin.  I forgot the name for it, but for snakes it's called molting or something like that.

OP, put lotion on your baby if you feel he/she needs it.  Just make sure it's gentle, hypo-allergenic and fragrance-free.  I love the Aveeno Baby lotion.

  • As PP said, their skin is going to be dry due to changes from being constantly surrounded by fluid and then an entirely new environment. Especially with the cooler and dryer weather. We bath C everynight but only use soap every 2-3 days. It did not make him anymore flaky, it was cleared up within a week or so & hasn't come back. He loves the bath & it helps him settle down in the evening which is his fussiest time.
  • our routine for our house is this - and pretty much has been since 1st was born and 6 weeks old.

they get bathes every other day and the days they do not get baths, they get good wipe downs at the dirty areas (sometimes with wet wash clothes, other times with baby wipes)  then they get baby lotion all over.

actually, yea they don't need lotion for the first couple weeks. Lotion doesn't help them naturally slough off the skin from being in the fluid so long.

This. Babies do not need baths everyday unless they are dirty. Dry skin can come from a number of different things, including bathing daily. However, I have never heard the "don't put lotion on a baby under 2 months old" bit. I think that is just odd. Anyway, at 3.5 weeks old a baby really only needs a bath 1-2 times a week.

  • we give DS a bath every day (just on his bum and penis) every time after he poops. He was just in the hospital with a bladder infection (VERY rare) and I get paranoid about poop and ecoli now!

it's question of preference, not a bloody rule.  it won't hurt...contrary to what the pp i quoted meant to say.

  • It is more like every three days with us.  The bath relaxes her to the point of practically falling asleep, but she hates getting out!  I blame our cold house.

  • If you bathe them every night as a bedtime routine, does it really help them sleep more?

This. I found that Johnson and Johnson was not helping at all. It's really thin and has waaaaay too much scent. I now use Aveeno products (yes I know they're made by J&J too but they have different indredients). LO's skin is great and has stopped breaking out and getting scaly.

I bathe my LO every other day unless we have a major blowout or something

If I bathed DS after every poop, he would have 8-12 baths a day!  :-)

I bathe DS every day or every other day.  He spits up after almost every feeding and I also find that the bath routine calms him down very well and helps him get rid of a bit of gas.  He doesn't cry much but gets frequent gas pains so anything to help him feel more comfortable.

  • We bathe DD 1-2 times a week. But I wash the folds of her neck where spit up and formula can get stuck twice daily. I do her hands at the same time.
  • We started doing baths everyday after his cord fell off. He loves baths and it helps him relax for bed at night. He had some dry skin on his face from baby acne, but that has gone away. I never put anything on it. He gets a massage with lotion on his body after his bath.

    Confused

lotion is just fine for a newborn...

  • You can use lotion on a NB. Who the hellll said you can't?

I do not bathe V everyday. More like every other day. We only use all natural lotions and soaps/washes. (Burt's, California Baby...no Johnson's or Aveeno...that stuff is definitely more of a personal preference.)
