Tofu for babies?

I just bought some organic soft tofu to try with LO, but then I searched it online and found all kinds of strong opinions both ways about giving tofu (soy) to babies. Some of the anti-soy stuff sounds really propaganda-ish, so I'm not sure what to believe.

I grew up eating tofu; it's a cultural thing. Could the occasional serving really be harmful to baby?

  • personally i do not think that the occasional serving would be harmful. large amounts can be, b/c the soy has something in that that mimics estrogen (my mom drank tons of soy milk when she went through menopause b/c she couldn't do hormone replacement therapy and it did help) but i don't see how a few bites here and there could really be that bad.  i haven't done the research, so i could be wrong, but for most foods i think it's all about moderation :)

Agreed.  If your baby likes it and digests it well, it's probably fine.  I'd imagine that vegetarians give it to their babies all the time.

Yes from me too. It would be a concern if you were giving large amounts or feeding them soy milk vs BM/formula, but I honestly don't think a little tofu here and there is harmful.

  • Ditto on pp's =) Let us know how your LO likes it if you do try it!

  • I gave him some today with carrots and he ate it up! I don't think that says much, though, since LO eats everything. So far... ;-)

    Thanks for the sound advice!

  • +1 in agreement w/ small amounts can't be bad.  I'm much more concerned about the hormonal impacts of the nasty synthetic hormones found in commercial meat!

Jack loves tofu but has only had it a couple of times in stir frys.  Speaking of soy, a few months ago I though Jack was doing so well with edamame when we were eating out at a sushi restaurant - he seemed to be shelling them and everything.  The next day I *ahem* realized he had not actually chewed any of the beans.  Oops.

Ha!!! The diaper doesn't lie... I busted DH letting LO play with (i.e., EAT) paper napkins that way, too!

Have you tried sneaking into cereal? Maybe start with that and then reintroduce it on its own? I blend small amounts of veggies into his oatmeal at breakfast and then serve it with fruit. I'm paranoid about him not developing tastes for all the things DH and I normally include in our diet. :)

No I haven't =P I stopped giving him rice when his eyes started getting all red when he eats (cuz I thought it was the rice) and pedi suggested that I go straight into fruits if he's possibly allergic to grains so I haven't tried any other grains yet either. But turns out his eyes always gets red when he eats but I haven't gone back to grains, so I think I could probably go back to grains now and do the blend to get him to take it =) Thanks for the tip!
