Photographer Issue: I need opinions

I haven't been on here in a few months, but I need people to be honest with me.  I think the photographer we use is photoshopping John's pics.  He has a pretty large stork bite birthmark in the middle of his forehead.  I know that it has faded a lot over the past year, but it's definitely still there.  I picked up some pics of J today and it is completely gone.  I didn't say anything.  Tomorrow we are having some family Christmas pics made at Portrait Innovations.  I figure if it is noticeable in those pics, I'll know his pics have been edited.

If I'm right, what would you guys do in that situation?  I think my kid is adorable and the birthmark is part of who he is.  It has never bothered me. I just can't imagine photo shopping baby pics.

Re: Photographer Issue: I need opinions

  • I think if it does show up in the pics from PI you should ask the photog about the pics he took. If he says he did photoshop, I would ask that he reprint the pics b/c you want LO "real/natural". He should have asked you if he did the ps and not assume you would want doctored photos.

  • I think most photographers now days photoshop their pictures.  But, taking his birth mark away is totally different than making the colors brighter and softening the background, etc.  I would definitely let them know you aren't pleased.

Portrait Innovations does zero editing, so you should be happy with those!

  • My husband works for a photographer doing their photoshop work so I read this question to him.

His response is that he would never photoshop out anything like a birthmark. It may have looked like dirt on the lens so therefore he may have accidentally photoshopped it out. Rule of thumb is that you never take away from the subject more than their mother could recognize.  (Amateur retouch artists always go further with the retouch then they should.)

As far as photoshopping baby pics - their are a thousand reasons they do.  First you can head swap (perfect pic with perfect face), removing drool, food, bags from eyes, tears, etc.

If you think that there has been something removed that shouldn't have been you should tell your photographer.  The last thing they would want is you not to be happy.  If they don't make it right then by all means complain to others about their work.

    Hope that helps!
