New Weight Watchers: too much food?

So I am trying out the new Weight Watchers Program and I feel like they are allowing me to eat too much food. I just dont understand how I am going to lose any weight if I eat like this. When I was doing the old program, I dont feel like I ate as much food..

What do you think of the new WW program?

Re: New Weight Watchers: too much food?

  • I haven't heard the new details yet.  I find out this week.

    Can you fill me in?

  • First of all, fruits and vegetable are unlimited, you can eat 100 bananas and it will still be 0 points. They are saying that you should exercise your judgement when eating fruits/veggies and stop eating when you feel full. Well hellooo! If I had judgement when it comes to food, I wouldn't need Weight Watchers!

I used to be on an 18 point per day allowance and now I get 29 points. Some foods went up in value, but still, it seems like I ate way too much food today. In the 29 points I was able to fit 3 cups of coffee (9 tablespoons of fat free creamer), 1 fiber one bar for breakfast, 1 cup of whole wheat pasta for lunch, 2.5 slices of pizza for dinner, 1 ww ice cream sundae and I can still pig out on fruits/veggies tonight if I get hungry. Do you really think I will lose weight eating like this?

  • I weigh in tomorrow morning so I'll know what I think of it then! I don't feel like I've changed how I eat very much over the last week (started the new plan on Sunday after going to a meeting that explained it all). Though I have been eating fewer 100 calorie pack-type snacks and more fruit, so that has to be good.

    We'll see what happens tomorrow!

  • Let us all know what happens tomorrow! I am very curious!

That doesn't sound like that much to me, but then I get 33 points/day. I also found that most foods went up -- the only ones that didn't are things like eggs and low fat dairy. This new plan encourages eating whole foods that are rich in fiber and protein. I went from 26 points to 33 points and my menus really haven't changed too much.

I understand your point about not having restraint, but do you really lose control with fruit? I'm not going to eat three bananas, but you better believe I could eat three 100 calorie packs in quick succession.

  • My problem is that I like reading and munching at the same time. I dont care what I am munching on, as long as I am munching on something, I know its not very healthy, but that is how I relax. Soif I have a really good book, I can sit there and eat 2 apples, a cup of grapes, etc. But I see your point, how many apples/grapes can I really fit into myself...Hmmm...Maybe this will work!

  • I don't know anything about the program, new or old, but I did see this article this week and maybe it has some insights.

  • Are you using your 49 reserve points?  I feel like I'm eating a reasonable amount with the 29 points.  My number also used to be 18, and I thought that was really low.  I was always starving and would break down and cheat all the time.  I think 29 is the perfect amount of eating until I'm satisfied, not stuffed or starving.  But, I'm scared to eat all 49 of the extra, because I feel that might be a bit much.  Also, my leader specifically said that you can not eat 100 bananas.  You can only eat one serving of fruit at a time.  It's the same as the 0 point items under the old system.  For example, pickles have always been 0, but it's understood that that means just one, not the whole jar.  Same thing with fruit.  At least, that's how it was explained at my meeting.

I'm very curious to see how much I lost (if anything) on my weigh in day next week.

  • But what do you mean by one apple "at a time"? So if I eat an apple now, and then another apple half an hour later, does that mean I ate one apple "at a time"? What if I eat the 2nd apple 5 minutes later? An hour later?

    Thanks for sharing that.

What a ridiculous photo they used to go with it, though. Ugh.

That really doesn't sound like too much food.

LOL!  FWIW I just started WW on Monday and I've lost 5lbs!!  I'm totally amazed.  And it really doesn't feel like I'm starving.

  • The previous system (which wasn't the original either) gave you xx number of points per day + xx weekly 'bonus' point, and you could earn activity points. Then there were two options - the points plan or the turnaround plan. The points gave you xx number of daily points - much higher than the previous version, but this one didn't have weekly points to use - it dispersed them over the whole week and added them into the daily points. The other option was the turnaround program which allowed you to eat as much as you needed not wanted of certain foods. If the old points plan worked for you, then do the points plan, but lower your daily target, or make sure you eat lots of 0 points foods.

  • Oh - Also - the turnaround program only lets you eat as much as you need of certain foods, the others you have to count. The point is that the ones you don't count are healthier and will fill you up faster and keep you full longer so you really won't be overeating. WW is all about teaching you how to eat for the rest of your life -  not a diet that you use to lose weight and then end up gaining weight when you 'go off the diet'. The point is to learn how to eat everyday for the rest of your life. It is a lifestyle not a diet.

  • I go to meetings with 2 coworkers and we all feel the same way. For example, here's what I ate today and stayed within my daily points: yogurt, apple, banana, orange, salad, roll, popcorn, 3 pieces of pizza, and a beer. I weigh in Monday, so we'll see.
  • The way it was explained at my meeting was that if you really want to eat 12 bananas, then go for it. Pig out on bananas because they're basically betting that you won't, realistically.

More importantly, you're basically being encouraged to eat that banana rather than the 100 calorie pack. Both were 2 points on the old system, but besides not filling you up as well, the 100 calorie pack lacks the nutrition of the banana. So the new plan is designed to encourage you to go ahead and choose the fruits, and thereby avoid the processed crap, y'know?

Like she said, it's not as though any of us ended up at Weight Watchers because we couldn't stop eating bananas.

So generally, I think it's designed to encourage healthier chooses, but I have the opposite problem as you. I used to get 23 points a day, and now I'm in the same 29 point category as you. That doesn't seem right to me. Stick out tongue

  • I am finding that it's easier to stick to the new program which had me nervous for a minute, but I'm hoping it's because they are encouraging eating how I tend to when dieting anyways - lean protein, fibrous veggies, lots of fruit, avoiding processed crap.  I also feel that the amount of food on the old plan was way too low.  I was getting 19 points which is about 1000 calories.  When I eat "right" (clean, lots of protein, lots of fiber, etc) I can actually lose weight at a pretty good rate on more like 1700 calories per day and feel much better.  I think that they are just driving home the point that it's not just about calories.  Eating 1500 calories per day of the good stuff (especially high fiber stuff) is way better than eating 1000 calories per day of processed crap.

  • I was on it for a bit and then took a break and signed up again on Tuesday.  I have WAY more points then ever and feel like I am allowed to eat more.  I am trying to stop when full but that is a problem that I have always had (hence joining).

I don't feel a difference but it has only been a few days after a 3 month break.

If I am not mistaken, if you eat 1 apple at lunch and then one 30 mins later it still counts for lunch. For that second one to count as a snack, it has to be 2  hours later. It works the same way with other food. Say you have 2 hardboiled eggs, eating both of them equals a higher point value than if you were to seperate them by that 2 hour break. Yes fruit is free, as for veggies, potatos and corn I thought you still had to count.

I don't think its too much food, I add my fruits and veggies in with my meals and snack on yogurt or banana. I look at it as just because they are free, I don't want to eat junk just because I have the extra points.

I've only been on the new plan since Wednesday so I can't say anything about weight loss, but so far I like it.
