Blood pressure spiking post delivery

HI ladies,

Since I delivered the girls ( about 1 month ago), my blood pressure has consistently been going up. Right now its 150/90. I have been seeing my doctor and she is monitoring it regulary to see if I will need to go on blood pressure meds to get it back under control. If it doesn't go down or start to go down by next week I will need to start blood pressure medicine.

My question: Did this happen to any of you ladies? How long did it take for your blood pressure to go back to normal? I had no blood pressure issues during my entire pregnancy so I am suprised to see this spike post delivery.

Please let me know if anyone had a simliar experience.

 Thx!

Re: Blood pressure spiking post delivery

  • My blood pressure went up after delivery, but it was when I was in the hospital and my doctor said it was b/c of the lack of sleep.  I didn't need to go back to have it monitored at all, so they must not have been too concerned.  It was back to normal at my 6 week PP checkup, though.

  • Mine went up even more post delivery (3 months ago) and still hasn't gone down completely.  They checked my blood pressure right before we were going to leave the hospital with one of our girls (they had already taken her tag off) and it was so high that they wouldn't let me leave until my husband picked up my prescription.  It took more than 2 hours because the On-Call Doctor was in an emergency C-section.  Not fun.  I went in a week later to get it checked and they upped my meds.  I am in the process of weaning off of them right now and hoping that it isn't a permanent thing.  Normally it only takes a month or so, but I've had some issues with hypertension in my past and it runs in the family so I might just be special. Smile  Good luck and take it easy!

  • Mine had slightly increased at the end of my pregnacy and then continued to increase after delivery.  I was actually kept in the hospital for an extra 2 days because of it - my doc had to try a couple different meds to get it under control.  I was on meds until my 6 wk check up and my blood pressure was back to normal at that time and I was able to discontinue the meds.

    Hang in there!

  • I got pre eccylmsia after delivery and had Magnesium drip for 24 hrs and had to leave the hospital on Labetalol 200mg 3 times a day and my BP still was like 140/100. i monitor it at home so I had to keep reporting to my Doc. 2 weeks after delivery I started getting dizzy and my BP dropped to 89/76, so they lowered my meds to 2 times a day 100MG. It is controlling them but every once in awhile it may be 130/92. Sunday will be 4 weeks since delivery. Hoping in a few more I can be off meds.

  • Mine did this.. same thing, I'd never had BP issues my whole life, but did develop pre-e.  Mine went down after about 4 weeks (was using an at-home cuff).  I was on meds, but kinda would forget to take them after a while, and just started feeling well, so just quit taking them.  Mine was 160s/105s.

  • MIne went up post c-section & my OB prescribed labetalol also. can't remember the dose, it was pretty low, and I was on it from the hospital until my 6 week pp check. It has been back to my normal baseline ever since.
  • thx ladies! hopefully this is a very temporary issue!
