Anyone have Direct TV??

I have standard digital cable at home, so Direct TV is a foreign beast to me. The doctor's bedroom at work has Direct TV hooked up to this truly ancient TV. It is the kind that sits in a wooden case on the floor!! Anyway, I turned it on a couple of minutes ago, and all it is saying is "searching for satellite signal." What do I do to fix it? The error code is (771) if that helps. It will be a very quiet time down here til 8 am if the tv really doesn't work. I usually have CNN on in the background.

  • Are you having bad weather?  Sometimes that interferes with the signal transmission.
    2 years TTC with 5 losses, 1 year recovering, 6 months applying for adoption approval, and almost a year waiting for a placement. Then, a miracle BFP at age 36!

  • That means there is something wrong with the signal. Could be the dish, could be the cord. Do you have HD? Try moving the cords around seeing if the signal pops back in. Also, unhook everything, and hook it back up. If That doesnt work, see if something is blocking the dish. If that doesnt work, then you will have to call them.

  • Maybe the dish got bumped or moved due to wind/snow - and changed the alignment?  The menus are pretty good - hit the menu button, then select Parental, Fav's, & Setup.  Then go to System Setup and then Satellite.  Then select View Signal Strength.  This is a good starting point to make sure the dish itself isn't out of whack.

    ETA: if you google DirecTV error 771, you get a bunch of links to web forums with other troubleshooting tips.  Sounds like it could be a number of things.

    Followed your instructions... all 32 transponders are reading a big fat 0. Guess that means no TV for me tonight. Boo!!

  • There should be a drop down little flap on the front (where the access card goes)  inside there is a rest button that will reboot the system.  That usually fixes it for us.
