Hey guys....Hope everyone is doing okay tonight....I just wanted to see if someone might be able to clue me in for what kind of road I'm in for...
We've been trying for 11 cycles now with no luck. My OB/GYN just ordered a SA a the results came back perfectly normal. My Dr wants to talk about the next step on Wednesday. What should I expect? He mentioned possibly referring me to an RE and I have an appointment (pre-emptively) on the 13th. What do they normally do on the first and second visits?
(FYI...we concieved my son on the very first cycle of trying 3 years ago.)
Re: Questions about RE
At my first visit (just a consult), I had to answer a lot of questions about both my and DH's health/family history (I'd take DH with you if you can) and we just talked generally about an overall first plan. Second was quite a ways after that, and it was for a hysteroscopy -- a (not scary and only a slightly crampy) procedure where they look at your uterus with a camera (yes, it's weird, you get to see inside your own uterus) to see if there's anything that needs to be taken care of (fibroids or other issues) before you invest in fertility treatment of any kind. Some REs probably have you do blood tests as well, but mine didn't need to because I was having other medical stuff done and my blood had been tested up the whazoo; I do remember he wanted an STD blood test for sure.
I'm sure other people have had other experiences; that's what happened with me. It was actually quite affirming to do all of the above, because I felt like I was being proactive and working in a concrete way towards the goal....hopefully you'll feel the same!
The first appointment will be mostly talking and discussing different options. The RE may request another SA, and will want a series of tests on you. It will mostly be b/w but could also be an u/s (ultrasound) and/or an HSG (hysterosalpingogram.)
The first step will probably be Clomid. Please be warned that you should have testing before going on Clomid and should be monitored with u/s while on it.
GL!
DH and I had to fill out a lot of ppwk. before hand to bring in. We met with the RE to discuss what was going on. They did an ultrasound that day and then told us what the next steps would be, then they ordered a SA for my husband. (Just a heads up, the RE may want to do their own SA on your husband.) Good luck!
