Promotion Help

Hey Ladies,

I am new to the military life and my husband is getting promoted today. I have heard that some people throw a promotion dinner/party. Is this necessary? I am taking him out to dinner of course and I was going to invite some of our close friends. What is your opinoon, do I need to throw a party or dinner and invite everyone? Thanks!

Re: Promotion Help

  • My husband was promoted (the only time since I've known him) while he was as AFIT. Since I wasn't living in the area, his classmates reserved one of the spare classrooms and bought a cake, and I brought in juice and coffee (I went to visit for the promotion).

I don't think it's mandatory, but it is a nice thing to do. Since we've been here, a few people have been promoted and they usually just invite everyone out to the bar and buy the first round.

  • Depends on the company/platoon....and on the promotion.  If its an NCO promotion (corporal and E-5 through E-7) a small get together may be appropriate.  LNCOs (some E-7s on up): Party

Lower enlisted, shoot.....can barely afford their own rounds at the bar, let alone everyones....celebratory dinner, close-knit.

Officers: We gotta show the love.

When I got promoted to Cpl, we were deployed, and still had to buy a round for everyone.....though it was just my new squad, and it was ice cream (no clue how O-like ice cream is on a 120 degree day in a sandbox!)

My little sis just got back from deployment and got promoted to specialist.....she doesn't have any dependents, so she actually could afford to buy the first round.....for everyone but herself...(19yo...haha)

For my SGT promotion I was planning on buying pizza for everyone in my section. The major in our section beat me to it!

My Sis just got her SPC promotion (she got promoted during her deployment, but her unit got seperated, so no ceremony att)

She and her Battle that got promoted both got lei'd by the former Plt Sgt

  • When I got promoted to SGT I took my fellow NCOs out for a beer.

  • Usually the squadron/unit takes care of that. They would be the ones to do some kind of celebration for him.
