seeing that LC may come 1 month early, i have some questions.
1) where did you guys find your cribs (if you have one)?
2) how did you pick a pediatrician, and what kinds of questions do you ask them?
i figure the holiday season will fly by so i should start looking around
Re: cribs and pediatricians
1. walmart
not my first choice store but the price was right for a simple modern look I was going for.
ILs gave us a certain amt of money for the crib so we decided to underspend and use the leftover for a mattress. yay.
2. we didn't interview or anything b/c we knew which office we wanted to go to (same one I went to as a child and my friends dad is one of the managing docs) but if you are not familiar with the office or don't get glowing referrals from people you trust I would think that would be important. All the med-large offices around here have set meet and greets also.
i know you aren't supposed to get a used one but we did. we inspected it and it is nice and sturdy so we went ahead and got it. we found it on CL and have been happy w/it so far.
i googled "questions to ask a pediatrician" and found several lists when we were looking but ultimately we chose based on word of mouth

we ended up with the graco lauren crib, purchased from amazon. it's rated highly in baby bargains, i wanted a simple white crib, and i couldn't justify paying 2-3x more only b/c i might like the style a little better. we've been happy with it so far (as happy as you can be, when it's only used as a temporary place to put the baby down after changing while washing our hands!). it does a great job holding clean laundry and stuffed animals too
i chose the pedi office based on proximity to our house and recommendations from friends and coworkers in the area. it was really important to me to go somewhere nearby if at all possible, and it turns out there really is only 1 very large practice, with 7 offices, around here. there are others, obviously, but these guys dominate the field, it seems. one of their other offices, not quite as close to our house, but still close, does weekend visits, so we could see someone if E was really sick, which is nice. then i wanted to do meet and greets but really just didn't have/make the time to do them. so my plan B was to choose one person kind of randomly (based on how much i like their photo, and how long they've been practicing
, which is about the only info they post on their website). but since we had the nicu stay, i wanted to find someone who had experience dealing with babies with E's history. i asked some of the nicu nurses and NP's, and went off of their recommendations. at least one of them uses them for her own kids, and many of the docs were residents at the hospital so the staff is familiar with them. I never ended up doing a meet and greet, due to time. I figured, i trust their recommendations (they converged on one doc in particular, whom the nurse's kids see too), we'll go to a few visits and if i really don't like her, we can find someone else in the practice then.
We have the Graco Lauren too! but in espresso. I really like it
but we didn't purchase from Amazon. I got it from Burlington Coat Factory because I had a 15% coupon from my Pregnancy magazine so it was cheaper than Amazon for us to get it there. We also got the matching changing table from there too with another 15% coupon. We actually made our decision on what crib to get by finding the highest changing table (MH is tall) from all the cribs <$250 at Babies R Us. Graco Lauren was the highest, so that's what we got!
We just picked one that was accepting new patients. I think my only preference was that it would be female (don't know why, it's just how I felt for some reason?) and that she is board certified (that's very important to me). And for me, it was like picking any other dr (we have PPO so we have some flexibility too)...I usually just try them out by just seeing them and seeing how it works out. If it doesn't then I switch. Right now, MH isn't too gung-ho about her, but I'm ok with her. I think she's very good and experienced medically and very careful, which is the most important thing to me. But she advocates CIO and we don't so she's always telling us to try it and I'm always like "ok
" but I never do. For me, it doesn't bother me because I don't see dr's for their parenting/life philosophies but strictly for their medical expertise. Everyone is different, so that's just what works for me
Hope you'll be able to find one that you guys like!
i know
if you remember, i wasn't super sure I was okay w/it, but still not willing to spend so much more just for looks - and knowing you liked it was what tipped me over into getting it!
Haha, that's right! I remember you were on the fence about it! Well, hope you guys are liking it now
I guess the thing is we haven't used it past the crib stage (since it converts later) so I guess I don't really know how it will work out as a toddler/daybed later on but the crib part is working well for us.
I went with the mid-priced one from baby bargains (do you have this book yet? you should def get it). It's the Baby's Dream Serenity which converts to a full size bed frame.
I lucked out with the pediatrician b/c I didn't get around to interviewing them and I had to pick one blindly in the hospital. I say go with other poster's recommendations
Def post on your local board (if this isn't it, I can't remember) for recs too.
1) where did you guys find your cribs (if you have one)? We got ours at Buy Buy Baby. It's Westwood Baby "Brookline" in espresso.
2) how did you pick a pediatrician, and what kinds of questions do you ask them? We asked our OB, and she had a glowing rec for someone in their group. We had a meet-and-greet with her and absolutely loved her. We had a list of questions I googled for, but didn't actually need to ask any of them. Most pedis are used to meet-and-greets, so they know what you're looking to ask....she answered everything we wanted to know before we asked it.
1) where did you guys find your cribs (if you have one)?
For Bella we have the Baby Italia Pinehurst Expresso crib, it's beautiful and I love it! it's solid and sturdy and converts to a toddler and full size bed. My parents paid for it for us
For this baby, we've been looking on CL for something that will work for us. We don't want another convertible crib since we plan to have 1-2 more AFTER this one so eventually we'll need bunk beds so I am trying to save some money while not sacrificing safety either.
2) how did you pick a pediatrician, and what kinds of questions do you ask them?
Ah pedis... I interviewed mine and everything and she's a PITA... that said, I didn't ask if she had any kids of her own (she doesn't) and I think that makes a HUGE difference!! She kept telling us to "let her CIO" but yet knew I was completely against that, at that point I said "you let your kids CIO" and she said she didn't have kids... how can you have any idea how to give advice on children if you have NONE!! I mean I know she went to school and has plenty of education but actually telling someone to do it and actually doing it are two totally different things...
So we're finding a new pedi for this LO comes. I'll ask: Are they pro-breastfeeding? Do they have kids? How many? Are they supportive of an alternative vaccination schedule? Office hours? Ease of scheduling appts? Nurse call line? and some others but that's what I can think of off the top of my head
i totally agree w/this...you can learn all you want in school but there's a lot of knowledge/experience that comes from having kids of your own... DH said that there are many questions he will answer differently when speaking w/parents now that he has experience with Miss A.

1. We bought the cheapest ones we could find. Yup. All cribs in Australia - and I believe it's the same in the States - have to meet certain safety requirements so we didn't have any concerns there. But we did have wallet concerns so we bargain hunted as much as possible.
2. None. Pediatrics work a little differently in Australia. Pediatricians are specialists, and you don't normally see them. You go to your GP for check-ups, vaccinations, etc. and if there's anything unusual or any concern you have that they can't address, you get a referral to a Pedi and then go see them. But most of the time you'd just see a regular GP.
