Any episiotomy victims?

I had an episiotomy with DS and I have to say that was a horrible recovery! My butt hurt for over a week after I gave birth! lol My question is has anyone given birth to another baby after an episiotomy? Am I more likely to have another one? Is recovery going to be worse the 2nd time around? Thanks ladies!

Re: Any episiotomy victims?

  • I had one with my 1st but I also had severe tearing with 37 stitches to repair the damage.  With my 2nd I had one too and there was no tearing and recovery was a breeze.  I didnt have one with my 3rd and had just a tiny little tear that required no stitches and recovery was even more easier.

  • hmm good question! I had an episiotomy too and I didn't feel the recovery was that bad but I'm curious to see if that means you're more likely for another one.

That belly pic is so cute!

  • Hmm I don't know but I am curious now too.  I had one as well with DS and while recovery wasn't bad I hope it's not worse this time.

  • xbrook, thanks. I have posted this on other boards and so far it seems as though the odds are on my side! From the answers I am getting most women seem to have an easier recovery or no episiotomy at all! SWEET! I did have a woman say she did bleed more the 2nd time around, but for the most part Ive had good news!
  • Good luck, I hope you have an easier recovery this time.

    You have a beautiful family!

Thankyou! Your little girl is adorable!!

  • I had one with #1, but had a 2nd degree tear with #2.  I was a lot more uncomfortable the 2nd time around.
  • I had a small one with DS #1 and I thought the recovery sucked!!!  At least for a good week of it - it hurt every time I moved!  I also had a small one with DS #2 (and he was a bigger baby) and I didn't even know I had one.   I kept waiting for the pain and uncomfortable feeling but it never came :)  So recovery was much better!  I did bleed longer after the DS #2 but that's probably mostly from the fact that I did too much, too soon - kinda hard not to when I had a toddler to chase around!

    Good luck!

  • I had an episiotomy first time around, plus tore, bad recovery.

This time, I did not need the episiotomy but I did tear a little. I think I had two stitches, recovery was much easier. I agree with the pp who said there was much more bleeding the second time around, and the BFing/afterbirth contractions were SO SO painful, which I wasn't prepared for.

  • I had one w/ #1 & I had a rough recovery too.  It hurt for months honestly & I was haunted by the idea of it again.  With #2 we tried to avoid it but I still tore...but the recovery was SO MUCH better!  I think I did bleed more but the pain & recovery was so quick.  I think you'll have better luck next time!

  • I had one with both. It seemed the recovery was worse with #2 than #1. With number 1, I didn't even hardly notice any pain.
