Mirena users, answer a question please!

I forgot to ask this at my appointment and now the office is closed for the weekend.  I'm looking on the Mirena website, but maybe it's so obvious that they thought they didn't need to specifically answer it.  Stick out tongue

Is Mirena effective IMMEDIATELY after placement or do we need to use a condom for a week or so (like when you start taking the pill)?

Thanks!

  • That is awesome!  I'm making my appointment on Monday.  :-)
  • This was almost a year ago, so I might not be remembering correctly, but I asked my doctor this when he placed mine.  I'm pretty sure he told me that we didn't need to use any back up, that it was effective immediately.

That being said, it didn't even matter.  I had MAJOR cramping and I bled heavily for about a week.  So there was no sex happening anyway.

This...definitely wasn't feeling sexy time for awhile after my IUD was inserted.

That stinks! I was totally fine after mine!

  • Its effective immediately :) Enjoy!

But after mine I was in so much pain/cramping that I did not want anything to do with my SO.

  • It was immediate from what I remember.  Pretty awesome!

  • The IUD part will prevent immediately however the hormones don't start taking effect for 1-2 weeks (similar to the pill). So yes and no it should still prevent but it is not at 100% effectiveness.

My provider told us to be careful and use a condom for 2 weeks.

  • Immediately!

My periods have been all over the place....much lighter though and less painful.  And everytime DH and I DTD, I bleed for several days afterwards.  Those have been the only issues.

It takes 6 months for everything to even out supposedly.
