Question for mamas who have to dress a LO for snow

My DH asked me last night if I was putting a scarf on DS before we went outside lately (really we aren't outside, just heading froma car to a building and back). I said no, because DS doesn't have one that is his size. DH sort of freaked over it saying we need to get him a scarf pronto, even suggesting it would be totally ok to wrap DS in one of my two yard long knit scarves. Uhhhh.

Is he right? Do we need to do a scarf? None of the other mamas in my mom's group put scarves on their LOs. Sure we put hats, mitts, and heavy jackets, but no scarves.

Is he being over-protective or am I missing the boat on this scarf thing?

Re: Question for mamas who have to dress a LO for snow

  • I know my nephews in Montreal have neckwarmers they wear regularly.  I think that's the right name; they're like a the neck part of a turtleneck, just a circle of fabric.

But it gets hella cold up there.  Around here, I just zip DD's jacket up all the way when we go out.

  • nope we don't use a scarf either. he has one but i think it would drive DS crazy trying to get it off

i don't think it's necessary unless it's like super super cold or we're going to be outside for a long period of time

  • I don't do scarf for mine, but I've thought about putting one of my smaller fleece ones on him.  He's usually warm like his dad and we do hat plus hood, coat, boots, snowpants, etc. if we're going to be out more than going to and from car.
  • It's in the low 20's with snow on the ground here and we are out and about twice a day with the car to drop off/pick up kids. All three LO's wear the same items: hat, scarf, thin fleece and thick down jacket. They wear everything but the jacket in the car, then put the jacket on as the last layer when they get out.

My thinking on the scarf thing is that they need whatever warm clothes they can get when getting in the car since they have to take off their puffy jackets (not safe in carseat). DD and DS 2's scarves are short, teddy bear fleece with a little velcro tab that holds it it in a crossed over position in front.

  • I thought that they didn't really make scarves for kids because of strangulation concerns?  Not sure though.

Anyway, I bought DD one (a short wrap thing, not really a long scarf) from Baby Gap, but I am only going to use it if she is outside for a long time.

  • We don't have a scarf.  I think your DH is freaking out a bit.

    You're good.

  • I don't put on scarf on DD but I was thinking about putting a neck warmer thingy on her for days we play in the snow. I saw some at Walmart, for 4 dollars, they are fleece and just velcro at the back of there necks. I think at neck warmer is much better because it is less bulky than a scarf.
  • I think you're fine without a scarf.  I just got DD one of those warm hats that wrap all the way around the chin and velcro.  I think it does the job of a scarf for the most part.

How cold has it gotten there?  It's been in the '20's here and I don't feel like she's cold.

  • For just going to the car, no. For outdoor play he has a neckwarmer.
  • No scarf here and it's really cold where I live. LO's coat can zip up to cover his neck if I want it to.

  • Nope, no scarf. He has long underwear tops that are mock turtlenecks and regular turtlenecks that I will layer on him for playing outside in the snow.  I may at some point get him a fleece neck gaiter- that is what I always used for skiing and such.  Pretty positive they make them for kids as well.

It hasn't been very cold at all. What little snow we have had doesn't stick very long. I'm going to look at the neck warmers at Walmart. Maybe that will shut him up.

  • It took me a bit, but I found the hat I got my DS! It was on kidsteals one day, great concept, but my munchkin doesn't really like it... I got him the monkey one. I need to get him to like it/used to it, because I think it would be great, if he'd actually keep it on!
