I'd like an extra lens for Christmas. I have a Rebel XSi & a Canon 50mm lens (f1.8).

I'd like something w/ more of a wide angle (it's tough to take a lot of pics because you feel already "zoomed in"). Michael also wants a zoom lens and I agree, but I'm not educated on lenses enough to know what the 2-3 core lenses any amateur should have on-hand.

  • I have a lens (gifted to me, I couldn't afford it) that is a wide angle 17-35 mm.  I still usually use my 50 mm, but, I do sometimes rely on that one inside.  The focal length can be really handy and makes some fun shots as well.

IMO the 50 mm is the core lens, but maybe that's b/c that's what I almost always use.

My lens isn't affordable, but hopefully you can find something in that approximate focal length that is!

Another option would be to do a prime with a lower focal length, like a 30 mm prime (I don't even know what they make.) :)

  • lol I was looking on Amazon and thought "oh, this looks awesome" until I saw the price tag.
  • speaking of price tag, lens prices are all over the place, if you had a specific budget in mind, that might help narrow it down :)
  • I have a 17-200 which is just okay, my 50mm/1.4 which I love and a 24mm which I am growing to love. I feel like my bag is well-enough-rounded with those lenses. I will definitely look to upgrade my 24 to a higher quality lens in the future since I got the cheap one. I like how versatile it is in that it's wide enough to take interesting landscapes while I can also use it for portraits. I honestly think different people are going to love different lenses so you might think about renting a variety of lenses prior to purchasing. Or buy somewhere with a good return policy in the event you wind up not liking what you buy.
  • My next lens after the 50 was the Tamron 28-75 2.8. I love it!  It's pretty much the most highly recommended lens after the 50.

That one looks nice.  Kind of steep though!  I need to win the lottery so I can support this hobby :-) I'd love to get a macro lens too and they aren't cheap either!

I definitely got mine on mega sale!  It was $240 or something like that.

Someone on SPN posted about it a few months ago, and it was a one day deal from beachcamera.com.  Jason told me to grab it, lol.
