Opinions Needed on my Party Idea

We're having a Christmas party.  On a low budget.  Because I am cheap.

My original idea was to have everyone bring an app and provide wine (read: 6 cases, we're thinking about 30 people, all heavy red wine drinkers).  Have it at 7, bon fire in the backyard, Christmas lights decorating the greenhouse and backyard.

But now I am thinking I would rather have a dessert, hot buttered rum, and egg nog party.  We would provide all the food and beverage.  This would probably cost less than buying 6 cases of wine.  Still bonfire in the back with lighted decor.  People will probably still bring wine or food to this party because nobody ever shows up empty handed to a party.

Which would be better or which would you prefer to go to?  I was thinking 7pm would be after dinner so nobody would expect a full meal.

Decisions, decisions.

  • Sorry, Ash, but I would prefer the wine & apps party.  I'm not much of a desserts or sweet drinks person.

This is what I am thinking too, although, I love desserts.  But the crowd in general is more of a red wine crew.  But I want it to be festive.  red wine isn't a festive drink, not like egg nog or hot buttered rum.  Sigh.

  • I'm not sure how much of a red wine purist you are, but how about doing some mulled wine also?  I usually prefer my wine "straight up," but I tried this when I was in Germany and it was good.  I consider it to be festive.

I totally understand though if you are against "tainting" your wine.  lol

  • Wine & apps!

I'm not much of a wine drinker, but when our group of friends has a holiday party, everyone brings a dish & their own booze. We all basically share everything, but it keeps the costs down for everyone that way. In the past we've done an ugly sweater party & have also done a gift swap with gag gifts.

runs to google.  I hav never heard of mulled wine.  BUT maybe inspiration for the party...festive christmas cocktails from around the world?!

Williams Sonoma has mulling spices but you could probably also find a recipe to do your own.  Never done it myself, so I have no idea, I just know when I had it in Bavaria it was warm and oh so tasty!

  • I'm the odd one, but I would like the desserts & egg nog idea the best - especially if you think people will bring wine anyways.
  • Could you have apps, and then a choice of drinks(wine or rum./eggnog)  I dont know if that would be weird together?

  • I prefer apps/wine.  I'm not much of a sweets /eggnog kind of gal.

The mulled wine is delicious.  Here they call it hot wine!  We make it all the time.  You take rather cheap wine and put it on the stove with a couple cinnamon sticks and 2 tbs of sugar.  (you can also add other festive spices like nutmeg).  Sometimes DH throws in some orange peels.  When the wine begins to simmer.  Take it off the heat, strain and enjoy!  It is delicious!

I will send you an evite!  You better come!

Thanks for the recipe Barbara.  Can I use any wine, does it have to be a good bottle to be good?  I might have to try this tonight.

on the contrary...it should be a cheapy wine since you are going to be adding all the flavor.  We use the 1 - 2 euro bottle of wine.

  • I lovelovelove mulled wine!  A few wineries around here do it in a crockpot on warm, and that works really well too.  Actually, one of them sells a spiced red wine that has all of the flavors in it, and you just have to heat it up. https://www.montelle.com/products/st-wenceslaus  Maybe a winery in CA makes something similar?  I have a bottle of this stuff right now, waiting to be opened for Christmas.  :)

I agree that a mix of drinks (wine/eggnog/rum/etc.) would be enough holiday with either apps or dessert.  Have fun!

Well score, I have some "second" bottles that will work just fine for this.  I am trying this tonight.

    My thoughts too!

The mulled wine sounds yummy, but have some regular red too.

I like the idea of a mix of things, can you ask some people to bring apps and some to bring sweets?
