Cloth Diapering

I know it's probably a little early for this, but DH and I are debating using cloth diapers vs. regular.  If we decide to go the cloth diaper route, I'd like to start collecting and register for the cloth diaper items early, as I know it can be a spendy initial investment.

There is a cloth diapering board on The Bump, but I've found it a little overwhelming at times with all the lingo.  I'd love to hear from any 2nd time+ moms who have tried cloth diapering, whether you still use them or not, or any other first time moms who have already made their diapering decision.

What made you decide to use/not use cloth diapers?  If you do use them or are going to, what brand are you using?

Re: Cloth Diapering

  • We've been weighing this same decision and talking about it for a while. We finally decided that we're just going to start in disposables. If we can get into a good routine and feel like we can handle doing the extra few loads of laundry, and if we find our childcare provider will be on board, we'll look into starting after 6-8 weeks. We're not the best housekeepers to begin with, so we really don't want to commit ourselves to it before we know how well we'll even handle the craziness of having a new baby.

I do understand the draw though. I love the idea of keeping the chemicals off our baby's skin, and cloth diapers are SO freaking cute (I have a hard time with the environmental impact reasoning though...as water is MUCH more valuable than landspace in TX, so most things I've read say the laundry offsets the impact).

  • Okay, i'm no expert, and just now pg with my first, but I plan to use CD, and one of my bf's did use CD for her two girls and she was able to make all of her diapers and diaper covers, with very simple sewing patterns. You may not be from atlanta, but this is a great site for all things CD, and the ladies on the forum are very friendly and knowledgeable ^.^

     Good luck with CD!

  • I just started looking into cloth diapers.  My good friend uses them and we were discussing the pros and cons yesterday.  I'm pretty convinced now that we're going to use them and the biggest reason is their cost-effectiveness.  Big upfront cost, but according to my friend they pay for themselves in a year and then any future kids you have will be free!  :)  (My friend suggested around 24 diapers to start off with, which could be around $400 for the brand she has.)

They are a little less convenient, but not by much.  You can get a washable bag to put in your diaper bag to store the dirty diapers when you're on the go and a diaper pail with a washable liner for at home.  There's a diaper sprayer you can buy and hook up to your toilet to clean the diapers at home before putting them in your washing machine.

My friend recommended this brand of diapers:
    https://www.bumgenius.com/index.php

(They happen to have a good deal going on right now, too)

So, I've never used them before, but this is the information I've collected so far!  If we do go with cloth, I'm going to start buying them soon when I find them on sale.
  • We'll be CDing. I already started my stash with 20 diapers I got for the price of 10 with a coupon! They are pricy, but in the long run they'll save money.

    https://allaboutclothdiapers.com/new-to-cloth-diapers/cloth-diaper-systems/

This website answered a lot of questions I had about the various types and how many I'd need to start (between 25 and 30 seems average, depending on how often you plan to do laundry). The 20 I got are a mix between All in One and All in Two diapers.

I've also read that some newborns are so small that CD have a bit of a leaking issue, so we'll be armed with some newborn diapers for the first couple weeks, just incase.

  • We are planning to use cloth diapers.  My sister has loved them for my niece and is passing all of her Fuzzibunz diapers along, so with no investment I figure it's worth a shot.  I hope to SAH so a little extra laundry should be no big deal.

  • Oh, one other thing: it sounds like some daycare centers won't change cloth diapers (but my friend thinks that maybe since cloth diapers has become more popular lately they are accepted more).  So, you'd want to check that out if you're doing the daycare thing and maybe do a combo of CD and disposables if that was the case.
  • I'm a first-time mom-to-be and planning to use cloth.  I'm VERY allergic to latex and find that after changing my niece multiple times in one day that my hands have broken out and I have to go back on steroids to relieve the pain.  There's a lot of exposed elastic material in disposables that irritates my skin in varying forms.

I'm planning to do a trial through jilliansdrawers.com to find what type of cloth diaper system works well for us.  DH wants them to be as close to disposables as possible, which is fine with me.  I'm a SAHW now and don't mind a few extra loads of laundry per week especially if it prevents me from breaking out and being in pain.

  • I'm a first time mom but I've been dead set on using CD since before we started TTC.  I'm cheap and I'd rather spend my money on something I can get a great deal of use out of instead of just throwing it in the garbage.

I've been researching for months now and have a general idea of what I want to buy.  I'll be using prefolds for the first month or two with a few covers and then we'll switch over to the all-in-ones and use the prefolds as additional absorbency for overnights.

I'm actually planning on buying our first CDs tomorrow.  I'm going to get 3 dozen prefolds.  I told DH I'd like to make a small CD purchase every time we get paid and build up our stash over the pregnancy instead of shelling out all the money at once.

  • I want to, but am a little overwhelmed.  From what I've read newborn cloth diapers only last for a little while because you have to switch once they get a little bigger (even if they are adjustable).  I think I'll wait a few weeks to start, but might start building my stash soon.
  • CD was so easy!

We used prefolds with Thirsty Duo covers.  We got a great deal from a local Oregon vendor (https://www.weebunz.com).  Plus, those ladies are amazing!!  If you have any questions or concerns, give them a call!  They spent hours working with us and making sure we were comfortable with all the different options

I CD'ed DS until he was STTN (around 6 months old).  After that, he starting getting bad rashes so I had to switch.  I still hate spending money on disposables  lol  NB's poop like every two hours, so I think using them when DS was young was a great investment  :)

  • We have done a mix of cloth and disposables. For cloth, we use prefolds and doublers in a Thirsties brand cover. I also like the Thirsties Duos.

    I am so jealous!

We are CDing and excited about it. I will be doing a combo of Fuzzibunz all in one, Thirsties covers, and Thirsties duo with pre-folds. We will also do the woolies (I may getting the name wrong) for keeping leaks on long trips and overnights to a minimum. Because we have gotten a bunch of stuff for free (carseat (borrowing from my sister, and I know it's history), crib, brestfriend, boppy, etc (I hound freecycle)) I hope to register for mostly diapers and get our friends on board!

Good blog post!  Thanks for sharing!

  • I use a combination of cloth and disposable, and have since DS was born. We used a service at first, which IMO was a waste of money. I still had to wash covers twice a week, and prefolds are my preference only for tiny newborns. Plus, they're super easy to wash/stack - no folding. Now I use pocket diapers and some all-in-ones, and I wash a load every other day. We mostly have Fuzzibuns sized (not one-size), and some prefolds and covers for backup.

There are very good cloth diaper trial packs from some of the online diaper stores. I order from Jillian's Drawers, and they have one that you can return after using/washing (minus a very small deposit) if you don't end up liking them. If I were doing it again, I would buy some soft covers (maybe a cover multi-pack) and prefolds for the newborn, and then do a trial pack once baby is over 10lbs.

By the way, I bet there are some great boutiques/baby sores with cloth diapers in Bend! What a great place to live :). My ILs have a vacation place near Bachelor, and we are there several times a year.

  • I have used cloth because it's so much cheaper overall and much better for the baby and the enviornment.

I have used prefold for the newborn stage with covers.  And then small and medium fuzzibunz after that.  I now have two potty trained (before 2:) boys.

I will be using the same set up for this one.

  • I'm a cloth diaper mama!  Please feel free to PM me with any questions, I did it from newborn to. . .well, we're still in diapers.  I am not optimistic that we will have these two potty trained before new baby comes along, but we'll see what happens.  I will have three in cloth if we need to though!

In the very beginning we used a combination of Kissaluv 0's and prefolds.  Both of these require covers, but you can reuse covers so you don't need as many covers as you need the insides.  You don't necessarily need to do a newborn CD, but if you are commited but want a cheap options, prefolds with covers worked great on even my 4 1/2 pounder!  We knew we would have smaller babies, so we knew we would get use out of a newborn stash.

We bought a stash of BumGenius 3.0's, both new and from a site called Diaperswappers.  They fit from about 8-10 pounds up to 30 or 40 suppposedly.  So really, if you have a bigger baby, you can use these pretty quickly.  My son is 25 pounds now and is in no way near the upper limits of the diaper.  We love using pocket diapers because you can adjust the absorbancy.  At night, we used the regular insert with a folded newborn prefold (so you could use these again if you buy them for newborns).  We recently had to start using disposables at night because we were having leaking issues overnight, but I think with more experimenting with the pockets and an investment in some hemp inserts we could have solved it.  DH has always been a fan of "one disposable a day" so that's what we do.

You can find people selling cloth diapers on Swap Spot here too.  I think we have about 36 total for my two kids, and I do a load of diapers every other day.  You don't want to go more than 2-3 days between loads, they get stinky.  I know people worry about cloth when you are out and about, but I've actually found it simple.  I carry a wet bag for dirty diapers, and extra clean diapers.  Easy!

There are a couple of sites that offer a kind of "rental" deal, so it's like a trial if you want to try out different kinds before you buy a stash.

A couple of reasons we love cloth:  Cost - we have saved money for sure!  Environmental reasons - we figured out how many diapers we would be putting in a landfill - crazy!  No blowouts!  Let me say that again - I have never had a blow out that required an outfit change with cloth diapers.  Disposables shoot poop up the back and I'm amazed at how many Mom's are changing their kids clothes multiple times a day for this.  The poop doesn't smell as much through the diaper.  Less diaper rash.  No stinky diaper champ full of diapers.

I'm sure there's more, but that's what I can think of now.  Do it!  :-)

  • I'd love to share with your about cloth diapering!  We initially started cloth diapering to be a bit more "environmentally friendly" I had 2 kids in diapers, and a third on the way...And it eventually turned into a great financial investment. We tried several brands of diapers but eventually landed with gdiapers... I loved this diapers because they have a second option of what they call "flushies" they are 100% biodegradable pads that you put in place of the cloth that can be broken apart and flushed down the toilet!  No diaper pail necessary!!  So we started with that, and then eased ourselves into full time cloth diapering.  We used to spend about $200 a month on diapers for all the kids, now I just do two extra loads of laundry a week... Totally worth it.  There are many different types an styles of diapers and if you want more info let me know, but I'll give you a good start on what you would need to begin if you went with G's...

The small, medium and large diapers are a 3 part system, cover, liner and then an insert (flushie or cloth) all the covers come with liners liners.  The tinys are a 2 part system cover with liner built in and then the insert.

New baby bundle (contains 12 tiny g's (6-10 pounds) and 6 small g's (10-16 pounds) and I think 80 flushies)

4 more small diapers, not needed but nice to have extras so you can do laundry less

30 gcloth (you change a newborn about 8-12 times a day so you want enough so you aren't doing laundry all the time.

We use cloth wipes (I suggest bottoms up baby wipes) they work great and they have a wonderful system for about $60)  I would suggest getting and extra set of just the cloths to have on hand.. don't want to run out of those!

The benefit to the 3 part system is that you only need to change the insert each time you change the baby, the liner and cover can be reused.  The liners get dirty occasionally with poop but you can switch it out with a clean one, and rinse the dirty one and it will try quickly.  The covers will get damp every now and then, and then you just switch out the whole diaper, but what a lot of these  AIO (all in one) diapers you have to  change the whole thing each change (meaning you need 25-30 of the diapers unless you want to do laundry everyday)

ANYWAY lots of info if you want more let me know... sorry if it was long winded.. one more note, when you are done with the diapers you can always sell them to people looking to buy used ones... so you can make some of your money back!

    HTH!

  • I would also recommend diaperswappers.com, not only to learn more but to get inexpensive used diapers. I built my first stash of kissaluv's that way so it wasn't too expensive. I ended up falling off the wagon until DS was about 6 months old. I sold the kissaluvs and bought pockets and a few all-in-ones and haven't looked back. Although the kissaluvs didn't work for me I hear they are a great newborn diaper. With the new baby I think I'll buy more all-in-one diapers from bumgenius and add a few more pockets as well. I have a smallish stash for DS but he goes through only 4 dipes a day. I do laundry every 2 days. A NB will go through more. If you are interested in a more economical dipe and don't care that they're made in China, I'd recommend the Kawaii brand. To me the fit similar to the bumgenius brand and have held up just as well as my bumgenius dipes.
