Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Has LO ever had hot dog?

I know that hot dogs are not healthy at all, but is it one of those things we should avoid completely or are they okay for toddlers as long as they are only given once in a great while?  Has your LO ever tried some?  We're making mac and cheese for lunch (a treat in our house) and I love eating it with bits of hot dog in it.  Just wondering if it's okay if DS tries it, as long as it's cut up into bits.

Re: Has LO ever had hot dog?

  • Mason loves hot dogs. We do Mac and cheese with hotdogs often. Most of the time I cut it in half and skin them, then cut them into bits for him.

  • My DD has had a hot dog probably 4 times, she LOVES them! I just cut them small...just like other things that aren't healthy - moderation.

    This, exactly.

  • My girls love hot dogs.  I buy them at Whole Foods so they are nitrate free.

  • Yes! We started off with tofu dogs when he was little and now he gets turkey dogs.  He loves them.  I slice them legnth wise and then cut them into bite size chunks.

  • We tried turkey dogs with DD but she hated them. I would definitely feed them to her if she liked them. Everything in moderation.
  • Both my kids of had hotdogs and they love them. They don't have them every day but they do have them regularly...maybe every 2 weeks or so.

  • DS loves them and they are so easy.  I think he ate them 2 or 3 times a week when I had terrible morning sickness!

We try to do turkey dogs and/or the nitrate free ones.

  • Honestly, no.  The only time we have hotdogs in this house is in the summer and usually during a bbq get together.  We rarely eat them from september-may.

Next summer, he'll probably try one.

  • I've offered it to her but she's not a fan.  She doesn't like french fries either - my child it weird.

  • Yes. The normal ones even. She's had pieces of them at baseball games, cookouts, etc. But she actually doesn't like them that much. She usually just eats the bun and chews on a little bit of the hotdog.
  • Nope. I guess I'm not against her trying them (everything is fine in small amounts right?), but we just don't eat them all that often.
  • She has but I only give her turkey dogs and she LOVES them.
  • I ended up hospitalized after a hot dog got stuck below my windpipe in my esophagus (I have a surgical site from surgery at birth, this is not an issue otherwise), so I'm terrified of them even though I rationally know that my kids won't have that issue. My older daughter has had them, but I'm not happy about it.  Aside from my irrational fear I think they're disgusting, so I don't eat or buy them and don't love that my kid has had them.  I hope and assume nobody has given them to my younger one since I've made it very clear she's far too young, but I guess I can't guarantee it.

Holy crap! The EXACT same thing happened to my mother. Haha. The doctors tried to make her feel better by making jokes about have a hot dog (of all things) stuck in her throat. She has an esophageal stricture and has to have her esophagus periodically widened through surgery.

  • We let her try them once and she is NOT a fan. Who doesn't love a hotdog? /pout

  • The boys eat them a lot.  We get the turkey dogs and they love them.  We just make sure they're in small pieces so they don't choke.
  • He had them out once and he LOVED it.  I just cut it up into tiny bites.   We don't get them very much, but I am not against giving them to him in moderation.

Wow!  My issue was slightly different, my esophagus and trachea both went into my lungs instead of one to my stomach, so every time I swallowed it went into my lungs.  I was very lucky to survive, so I don't at all mind not being able to have hot dogs as a result.  At the time there was a less than 25% diagnosis rate for my condition, generally the baby passed and nobody knew what happened, so I was really lucky!  Now it's diagnosed via u/s and there's surgery that can correct it.  I was never so relieved as when I was told each at the ultrasounds for my kids that they had fluid in their stomach, indicating that they didn't have my issue!

But, yeah, my problem with hot dogs is one of the few lasting results.  I'm terrified of them after being hospitalized from it!

  • I like to have hotdogs available if I need a quick meal. I buy the nitrate free ones and she really likes them. I cut them very small.

  • I didn't really have plans to give DD hot dogs, but DH announce to me one day that he'd given DD a corndog for lunch that day and she liked it.  I don't buy them, but we have been at events and she's had them then.
  • My LO has had hotdog a couple of times. I use the all beef kind for all of us. It's not something I give him very often, but cut up in Mac & Cheese once in a while isn't gonna kill him.

He also LOVES when I use the mini cocktail wieners and make pigs in a blanket.

  • We don't eat hotdogs, but I just wanted to throw out a plea to keep cutting them up! Someone in my company died after choking on a hot dog--a grown man with no esophageal problems.
  • Yes--both regular ones and nitrate free ones, and she has laid the smack down on them every time. LOL. We cut them lengthwise, then slice it, so it's not a choking hazard. She probably has a couple a month, but would eat them for every meal if we'd let her, I'm pretty sure. :-)

  • Nope.  But, the only time we buy hot dogs is for camping and we haven't taken LO camping yet.
