Parenting after a Loss

CD Mamas

I'm thinking about buying some bumgenius cloth diapers off of cottonbabies since they are currently on sale.  However, I need a little help and have no one irl I can turn to.

I was thinking about getting the one size diapers as opposed to the all in ones so they can grow with the baby.  Is that a good choice?  Also, there is an option between snaps or hooks/loops - which one is better?  Is there anything else that needs to be bought to go with them?

I really want to cloth diaper, but I'm so lost and have no local support so any help you can provide - I would definitely appreciate!  Thanks!

Re: CD Mamas

  • Kate started wearing BG OS around 2-3 months and we have plenty of room to grow. I would definitely recommend that route. I would recommend at least 12 of these. We have 20 OS diapers. I do laundry every other day, but could probably make it 3-4 days on my total stash (30+ diapers) We have velcro, which is easier to use, but snaps last longer, so I would do snaps.

I would get prefolds and covers for the newborn stage, since the OS will be a little big. I got mine at Greenmountaindiapers.com. I got 2 dozen prefolds, a set of snappis, and 4-5 Size 1 Thirstie duo covers.

I got 2 Large Thirstie pail liners and a couple of wet bags for the diaper bag. I use Rockin Green detergent.

    Hope this helps!

  • I like the one size because they grow with the baby.  I have both hook/loop and snaps.  I like the snaps because she can't undo them...she can undo the velcro and next thing you know you have a diaper coming out a pants leg.  The velcro gives you a little bit snugger/custom fit though and is easier in the middle of the night. I do like the snaps but don't think they are the best. Hope this helps :)

  • We decided for convenience to get NB sized (xs) diapers for the NB stage. I actually got almost all used ones from either Jillians drawers, Diaper Swappers, or the CD board here on TB.

However, we do plan to transition to OS after NB (we have a few smalls in other brands to help the transition) so they can grow with baby.

I suggest taking a look at the CD board here too - I learned a lot from them. If you have a local baby boutique near you, chances are they'll have some CDing classes/info. I'd take advantage of that too!

  • I haven't used any of my BumGenius OS yet, since LO is still so small.  I heard that they weren't sized quite right for newborns, so I haven't gotten them out of my stash.  I will be honest . . . I use a combination of sposies and CDs depending on the day.  When I CD, we use prefolds from Cotton Babies and diaper covers (either Thirsties Duo or Bummis Wraps).  I prefer the Thirsties, but they both work fine.  I also really like the Kissaluvs Size O fitted diapers.  You still need a cover, and they will grow out of these, but they are really convenient compared to the prefolds, and less of an investment compared to the BumGenius.  I was able to find some used at Cotton Babies that were in good shape.  I use Nellies Laundry Soap.  Everything is working out fine, except I haven't perfected how to keep the CDs stain free, as it is winter here, and I don't have a great place to lay them in the sun.

  • We LOVE our BG OS and have been using them since he was a couple of months old.  Before that we were doing prefolds and covers since he was too small.  We have 16 BG OS and a few other pocket brands that don't fit our guy as well.  But we gradually built up our stash once we tried different brands because they all fit slightly differently.  There are really good trial programs out there that I'd highly recommend.

As far as snaps or hook/loop, we didn't have an option so all of ours is hook/loop.  We have had to replace it on a few of the dipes.  BG sent replacement tabs for free and MIL did the sewing.  I think at this point, I'd still choose the hook and loop style.  He is so uncooperative at diaper changes that the snaps would be difficult.

  • The one size fit DD at 9lbs (she was 8lbs 7oz at birth, so they might have fit then too).  I had a NB stash, but wanted to see if the one size fit out of curiousity.  While they fit her, they would have looked ridiculous under clothes.  They are very bulky on a newborn.

I've heard that the hook & loop on the BG 4.0s is a lot better than the 3.0s.  I had to replace the h&l on my 3.0s after less than a year of use.  It is a great diaper though.  Since you can customize the absorbency, they are great for overnight.   They come with 2 microfiber inserts, so you don't need to purchase anything else for them right away.  You might want to buy some hemp inserts for overnight later.

I have some of the bumGenius Elementals (it's their one size all-in-one) and they have snaps.  I love, love, love that diaper.  It's very trim and absorbent.  I like that it is all natural fibers.  They took a bit longer to fit DD though.  I think she was 12lbs before they fit her properly.

I like having a combo of snaps and hook & loop.  H&L is faster and more babysitter friendly.  Snaps are nice because DD can't get them off (yet) and they hold up better.

  • About half my pocket stash is BG 3.0s.  I liked them fine except the aplix on them was awful.  I bought a set of snap pliers and a few bags of snaps and converted them myself.  Much better.

As pps have said, OS BGs won't fit a newborn.  DD1 didn't fit into them until about 3 months.  DD2 is bigger and might fit now but I haven't tried yet.  We used prefolds and covers exclusively for the newborn phase with DD1, and are using a mix of pfs and fitteds for DD2.

Lastly, I really advise against getting a whole bunch of any one diaper until you have tried them on your LO and know you like them.  Different diapers fit different babies differently and what works for me may not work for you.  In addition, BG 3.0s/4.0s have an inner layer of suedecloth that some babies are sensitive to - you wouldn't want to sink a bunch of money into them only to find your baby is one of them!  I'd advise doing a trial like pp said, or making your own trial by buying a few different OS diapers.  I highly recommend prefolds and covers for the newborn stage, though - they are cheap and work well as burp cloths or diaper inserts later on.
