Can I take Unisom?

I forgot to call my doctor today and I am tired of not sleeping at all during the night. For the past 2 weeks I have maybe had 4 hours of sleep each night. Before I found out I was pregnant I was on a prescription to help me fall asleep and stay asleep at night and it worked wonders. Now that I am pregnant my doctor doesn't want me to take it. I have some Unisom liquidgels (50 mg each). I looked online and alot of sites say it is okay to take but I just wanted to know if any of you have taken it. I will call my doctor tomorrow morning but I really need some sleep tonight or I might get caught sleeping at my desk tomorrow at work!!!

Re: Can I take Unisom?

  • Unisom (with B6) was suggested by an OB nurse for morning sickness.  I know you can also take Tylenol PM

Hope you get some sleep  :)

  • 1/2 a Unisom (every 6 hours as needed) with 25mg of B6 (2x day) was recommended for my nausea so I'd think you're good to go.  :)

  • I hope for sleep too!! I put my head down on my desk for about 15 minutes today and I almost fell asleep!

The Unisom I have is a liquid-filled softgel so I can't take half. It contains 50mg of Diphenhydramine HCl but no B6. Do you think it would still be okay?

Thanks again ladies. I hate not feeling like myself but I know it will be all worth it when July comes :)

  • Do not take the Unisom with diphenhydramine HCI!! It should not be used when pregnant!! These include the Unisom Sleep Gels and Sleep Melts!!

The Unisom that you can take is the sleep tablet containing 25 mg of doxylamine succinate. That is the one that is safe to take when pregnant!

Not true. Diphenhydramine is benedryl. Pregnancy category B. Of course, you want to limit drugs taken in the first trimester and throughout pregnancy, but benedryl can be taken while pregnant.

  • last time i was preggers, my ob recommended i take a benedryl if i couldnt sleep.  works like a charm!  i just take one though.
  • I have been taking a 1/2 tablet of Unisom and 100 mg of B6 every night.  It is fine to take.  There are different ingredients in the gel tabs though, so you might want to double-check on taking those.

  • I read the info. wrong on the unisom with diphenhydramine! It meant, do not take when pregnant for morning sickness. It is the doxylamine succinate that will be the one to help with morning sickness and not the diphenhydramine. Hope that clarifies!
