Doctor Visit WWYD???

DS has been not feeling well since Monday - a low grade fever on and off, diarrhea once or twice a day, a consistant cough and snotty nose he doesn't talk much but sounds hoarse.  He goes through phases of seeming better (usually in the morning and overnight) then getting worse in the afternoons.  I thought he was getting better yesterday acted and ate normally, no fever, only slight cough, then last night a low grade fever and was up coughing all night long - slept through the other nights.  Woke up this morning fine no fever slight cough fever midday but not tonight has been sleeping since 7:30 - random cough but not waking up.

WWYD - Take him to the doctor tommorrow do matter what? See if he sleeps well tonight then decide? See how he seems in the morning?  I feel like he will seem fine during the day and then get worst in the evening.

TIA - Sorry I got long.

Re: Doctor Visit WWYD???

  • I would see how he does tonight, but plan to take him to the doc tomorrow. Usually with congestion, it does it worse at night because they are horizontal and it will build up, versus him being more active during the day.

  • It sounds like its probably viral and just needs to run its course.  I would probably see how he does before deciding to take him to the doctor where he could catch other illness because if it is viral there isn't much they can do about it.

I would have him drink as much fluids (aside from milk, which can thicken mucus) as possible to help thin out his mucus which may help him sleep better and may help with his cough.

    Hope he feels better soon!

  • Jack has had they same thing you are describing since Sunday.  We took him to the Dr. on Monday, and the Dr. basically said he picked up a flu virus.  I tend to err on the side of caution and take him to the Dr. for stuff like this, since he is prone to ear infections.

  • I take dd to the doc every time her snot turns yellow or green and she has been congested for a while...she is prone to ear infections as well.

  • Sorry, I vote no doctor.  He's got a cold.  He's not spiking high temps and he's acting normally.  The doctor isn't going to do anything except tell you he's got a virus, keep him hydrated, use saline drops, etc....

But that's me.  Do what you have to do for yourself.

  • I wouldn't go to the doctor. You have to do what makes you feel comfortable though.
