Hi all!
I posted a few weeks back about a move to Houston. Now that we have some more details, I'm hoping to get some input!
We'll move from Indiana to Houston in just 8 weeks!! Because of the short notice and our lack of familiarity with the area, we've opted to rent for a year. We'll learn the area and have plenty of time to house hunt without feeling rushed or pressured. Also, we haven't sold our house here yet, so we'll be balancing a mortgage along with rent for a few months.
So my questions are:
1. Are there suburbs on the west or northwest side of Houston you recommend? DH's office is on the northwest side of town. So far, we've heard good things about Spring, Cypress, Katy, and The Woodlands. Can anyone vouch for these areas? We're looking for something safe, family-oriented, and a decently quick commute (45 minutes is pushing it). LOCATION DETAILS: Looking at a map (keeping in mind I"m not familiar with the area) his office appears to be just off of 290, just a couple miles northwest of 610.
2. In these areas, are there apartment complexes you can recommend? Or, alternatively, apartment complexes you recommend we avoid?
3. Lastly, I will be about 26 weeks pregnant when we move. I hope to call contact a doctor very soon to set up an appointment for shortly after we arrive to town. Please recommend your ob/gyn in these areas!
If there is any other information I need to provide, let me know! I thought this would be a good place to get some honest and helpful information!
Re: Help! Recommendations for places to live & OB/GYN
We are at 249 and 1960 area. Which is considered Spring in some areas and Houston in others. We lived for 14 months in the Villas at Cypresswood on Cypresswood at 249. We had a huge 3 bedroom apartment. I have no complaints, felt very safe etc. I work at 290 and Jones (outside of Beltway 8) and it takes me 15-20 minutes to get to and from work. We now live in the same area in Klein Schools.
My doctor is in The Woodlands and to get to my office at 9:00am this morning took me a good 35 minutes and that was in lite traffic. FYI.
290 can be a real bear with traffic especially at rush hour. Will your H have flexible hours - i.e. go in at 7 off at 4? If so I would definitely take advantage of that.
Hopefully the ladies will have more information. You might also go to the nest and post this on the Houston Board.
Welcome to Houston! Goodluck in your move and search.
Welcome to Houston!!! It's an amazing place to live if you take advantage of the variety the city offers.
290 is usually congested during peak time. I would strongly recommend the apartment complexes in the "Energy Corridor" (Eldridge & Briar Forest). DH works around there and many of his colleagues live there. It's easy to get from there to I-10 and Beltway 8.

We just moved to the Montgomery area, which is a bit farther northwest than you're looking. However, my doctor is in The Woodlands and I LOVE her so far. I also really like the hospital she delivers at.
Her name is Dr. Sara Gibson and she's part of the Greater Houston Physicians Medical Association. Here's her number: 936-321-4000
She is fairly new to the practice and is not booked out far yet, which is great. I think she has a good bedside manner, is cautious without being obsessive and listens to my questions patiently. I fully trust her.
The practice is housed out of St. Lukes off of 242 in The Woodlands. I was really impressed when I toured the hospital because they seem to be a bit more relaxed on some of the rules than other hospitals, but they do have plenty of security measures in place.
They have 18 rooms to deliver in. For the most part, you would labor, deliver and recover in the same room. You're allowed 3 people in the room during labor. There's a couch for DH to sleep... and your baby stays with you at all times (except for NICU cases, during baths or for circumcisions). It's fairly new and nice.
The only downside is the parking. It is a NIGHTMARE. However, as a preggy lady, you can take advantage of their free valet parking. Very handy.
Good luck!

I live in Katy/Cypress area which is really nice and safe area of town. I am about 10 miles from I-10 and 10 miles from 290. Any day of the week I would rather travel via I-10 rather than 290. 290 is insane and you can't get away where very fast from 5:30am to 9am or 3:30pm to 7pm during the week. I-10 is much better with the traffic in the am and pm.
I would suggest that you look for Dr's and Peditricians near or around I-10 and Gessner. There is a really nice updated hosiptal and they are building the New Medical Center west side off of I-10 which has Texas Children's, St Lukes, and Memorial Herman, all which are highly regarded in the city.
I also lived in the Energy Cooridor and it is also a great place to live, parks, apartments, housing, etc. it is great! It is also off I-10.
Welcome to Houston, it is great city, and you are looking in great areas!
Good luck, let me know if you need anything else!
Also look at Dr Jon Gogla at Memorial Herman at Gessner. In Katy, Tiffany Mullin for OB/GYN. I like both of these Dr's.
