Babies: 3 - 6 Months

At what age did you start Ferberizing/sleep training?

My DD is about 3 months old but has always been terrible about sleeping at night and has very rarely ever taken a nap during the day, I'm seriously becoming a zombie mom of a cranky little girl.  I'm just wondering at what age did you start Ferberizing/sleep training?  I don't know how much I have left in me until complete break-down.  TIA

Re: At what age did you start Ferberizing/sleep training?

  • We just started 4 days ago. She's 5 months and some change. I think 3 or 4 months is just too young for ferber.

She's not napping at all? I would say to try to at least get her to nap in her room to begin with. That's how we started. At 3 1/2 months we moved her to taking all naps in her room, even if it was her sleeping in her swing in her room. Then we cut out the swing, and just lay her in her crib after rocking her to sleep.

I couldn't imagine no naps tho......I think when they nap better they sleep better at night. Not sure how to help, but rock her and cuddle her, or even let her feed herself to sleep maybe....then lay her down in her crib. I wouldn't worry about too many bad habits at 3 months. And your baby definitely needs to nap.

Hang in there tho, she will older before you know it. :)

  • Our LO is 3 months today and we just started sleep training based on the book....Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child by Weisbluth....it's a great book that gives some insight into how to recognize when your baby is getting tired and how to encourage them to sleep. It discusses how to soothe to sleep.

I'm happy with the results I am getting already...I just read the book on Friday and put the tips to use right away and after a couple days he has slept through the night 4 nights in a row and taking 2-3 naps a day. The biggest change has been less nighttime fussing and overall happy baby. Also..we do not let LO CIO. I always get him right away.

  • My DD is 3 1/2 months and I just talked to my Pediatrician about this. We are having the problem of her only sleeping in our arms and I'm afraid it will only get worse if we keep letting her sleep like this. My Pediatrician said she is fine to CIO at this age. I do feel like it is young but I was feeling just like you are so I understand. My DH and I discussed it and we decided to start last Sat. and give it one week. If she didn't improve during the week we were going to wait because she's not ready. Well it has been a 180 in our house! After two days she naps in her crib and sleep from 7p-6a with one night feeding.

I know that some people don't agree to Ferberize at this age, but in my opinion a couple days of CIO is better than a sleepless baby for another 2 or 3 months.

I really do suggest to read Ferber's book. He does not approve just letting your LO cry all night long.  There are baby steps to follow that will help soothe your baby to sleep also. Good Luck!

  • I'm intersted in how this helped naps?  My LO STTN and has for a while...it's the napping that is TORTURE!  I know she's tired but won't sleep enough even if I put her down multiple times.  So I'm curious Doodle, are you ferberizing her naps too?
  •  Ferber says for naps to let them cry while checking in on them at certain times but it they haven't fallen asleep after 30 min., get them up and try again for the next nap.  We tried it for naps after our fist night of Ferber and it was terrible...she did not sleep all day. So for the rest of this week we kept up Ferber for nights and but during the day this week we would get her very drowsy and lay her down. Sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldn't.

We are going to try for naps again starting Saturday. I think it might work a lot better this time since it doesn't take her long to get to sleep anymore. If we don't get a nap out of her on Saturday we will wait a little longer to try again.
