Downtown/near downtown day care recs or search suggestions?

Since we live and work downtown now, we would prefer to be close to downtown for daycare. I have done a general search but wondered if anyone has any recommendations, or knows of good sites to search.

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to take much time off    :(    so want to get a head start on this

  • We're using Day Nursery at the Government Center, but they have several locations around downtown.  I really liked it during our tour.  It is much like a preschool once the kids get older, too.

  • There aren't tons of options downtown, but you should be able to find something depending on your wants and needs. We hae heard good things about the Day Nursery locations, and the Center for Young Children at IUPUI, although I'm not sure they take infants. We take Jocelyn (and will be taking #2 starting when he is 6 weeks when I go back to work) to Shalom Daycare at Roberts Park United Methodist church. We chose it for several reasons:

    - location (on Vermont between Delaware and Alabama): it is literally a block from my husband's office, which is great since he does 90% of drop off/pick up. It is on his way to work since we live just a couple of miles north on Alabama.

    - referrals: many of my husband's coworkers (mostly attorneys and judges) take their children there and highly recommended it.

    - cost: I think we paid $180/week when Jocelyn was an infant and $160/week now. There will be a discount when #2 comes along. It's tough to beat that price.

    - the older rooms are set up like a preschool, although I'm not sure Jocelyn will stay there once she is older since we have an excellent school in our neighborhood (Oaks Academy). Even now Jocelyn learns so much at "school"; we've been really impressed.

    Some downsides:

Facilities: Shalom is an old-school, church-based daycare, and the rooms reflect that. No fancy equipment or brand new buildings. This didn't matter to us. Our priority was some place where our child, especially as an infant, would be safe and loved. Shalom fits that bill for us.

Staff: Again, old-school. Again, our priority was a staff that really cared for our child and we absolutley got that. We really get personalized attention and feel like Jocelyn is everyone's favorite kid - I'm betting most parents with kids there are made to feel that way. I doubt that most of the younger-room staff have degrees in anything and some of them seem a little rough around the edges, but they know how to care for kids. Truth be told, they have taught us a lot about raising our baby.

I don't think Shalom is for everyone but we have been very happy there!

  • Do you have to be a church member/goer to use the daycare?

Nope!  That's my church. Smile My sister was one of the original kids there when it first opened.  It is a great place.  But, it's also a great church, so you should check it out too. Wink

I had seen them, and they are right near our work. Are they open on government holidays though?
