IVs in Houston Hospitals

Hello All!

I'm new to the bump, I just had a quick question that might sound a little weird.

Is it mandatory to have an IV as a standard of care at all Houston area hospitals?  I'm hoping for a no meds birth and don't see the need for an IV unless necessary.  I have no problem getting one if necessary, I just don't want it unless I need it.  TIA!

  • I'm pretty sure it's up to your OB. You could ask about a heplock - basically a needle in you ready to hook up to an IV in an emergency.

  • It's up to your Dr., but I believe most Drs consider them mandatory.  I didn't have an IV until very very late in my labor when things were going very badly.

  • It's up to you. You don't have to consent to any intervention that you don't want to. It makes it easier to decline if you have a doctor who doesn't 'require' one or is willing to negotiate for a hep-lock. But, even hospital policy/doctor mandated does not mean you have to accept it. ;)
  • I tried to get around it.  My Dr. said no way...  He said that in an emergency putting one in takes valuable time and he wasn't willing to risk it.  He is very liberal about other things, but would not give in on this one...
