Puffs vs. Melts Which one?

I want to start DD on some finger foods and I can't decide between puffs and yogurt melts.  Which ones did you start with and what do you like / not like about them.  I am soooo paranoid about her choking on something.  Do they dissolve fast enough so that they're not a choking hazard?  I'm headed to the store in a few hours and I'd like some advice / tips on which to get.  Thanks ladies!

  • We have tried both. I still break the puffs up into smaller pieces. The yogurt melts taste disgusting imo. I stopped feeding those.

  • Well if you're worried about her choking, I'd start with the yogurt melts, they melt really quick. And if you break the puffs in half, they should be fine too.

  • We started puffs a couple weeks ago and after gagging on them for a few days he now eats them really well.  We didn't bother breaking them in half or anything.  He'll usually hold it in his fingers and gnaw off part of it anyway.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • We started with puffs, I broke them in half for the first couple of days but I don't anymore. They melt pretty fast. We tried the yogurt melts but DD doesn't seem to like them. I am going to try and make my own.

  • We started with Puffs and still haven't given the yogurt melts. Our Pedi said to wait on yogurt until Bryce was a year old - due to the cows milk - so we are waiting on the melts too. It took him a couple of days to really get used to them - but I have never broken them in half. He was 7 months old when we started them. He loves them now.

  • Our doctor hasn't approved dairy so we don't do the melts. We do Puffs and get Happy Bellies (happy baby?) organic ones
  • Oh my gosh.  Yogurt = Dairy....duh!  lol

Our pedi hasn't approved dairy yet either, so it looks like we'll be testing the puffs.  She'll be six months old tomorrow.  I'm not to worried if she doesn't like them, but I thought I'd at least introduce them and have her work on her finger grasping.  Thanks ladies!

  • I got the puffs b/c DS was stalking my goldfish the other day. It dissolved ok, but he has a REALLY sensitive gag reflex... long story short when he went to swallow it he puked Ick!. we'll be trying them again in a week or so...

  • ....in my nutrition class we actually just learned that yogurt doesn't have lactose in it, and that's why gerber has it starting at the "sitter" stage. The problem with babies and lactose intolerant people is the lactose. therefore its ok for babies younger than 1 and lactose intolerant people to have in reasonable quantities.

this is the way i understood it anyways. But as we all know professors aren't gods, so maybe ask your doctor? but this lady is a nutritionist

  • We started with puffs. He prefers the puffs but will eat either. The yogurt melts are soooooo sweet. He actually makes a pucker when he eats them.
