c-section fatigue: when does it go away?

So, it has been about 5 weeks since my c-section.  My parents were here for the first 3 weeks afterwards, and they really took care of me while DH took care of the baby, so I got to rest a lot.  I've been on my own now during the days since then, except for the Thanksgiving holiday when my in-laws were here.  By the time DH gets home around 6 or 7, I am so tired I could just drop.  My mom and I were talking and she thinks it is fatigue from the c-section.  If you had a c-section, did you experience this, and if so, when did you get back to your somewhat normal energy levels (factoring in lack of sleep, etc.)?  TIA!

  • Sounds to me like new baby fatigue.  I never felt any fatigue after either c/s that I felt was attributed to the surgery.

  • Hmmm...I've never heard of that. I certainly didn't experience it. Ignoring the sleep deprivation stuff, I was back to normal energy levels within two days? Three? Is it possible you are just more affected by the lack of sleep than you think?
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Hmmm.  Maybe it is just new baby fatigue.  I am getting a good deal of sleep at night as Ruby is sleeping well, but I still just feel absolutely exhausted by the end of each day.

  • ditto the others. i had "newborn" fatigue w/ both the c/s and vaginal delivery.

  • Hmmm...maybe you need some iron supplements?  Before getting PG with DS I was borderline anemic and I took supplements.  I got the BFP and the OB said that my levels looked normal so she said I didn't need to take them anymore.  Then after I had DS she prescribed supplements for me again because she knew my iron levels would drop due to all the bleeding.

So I never felt super tired beyond the general sleep deprivation after having DS.  Low iron levels prior to having him left me feeling like a slug.  So I recommend going to get a blood draw and see if you have a low iron count.

  • I agree that it's probably new baby tiredness.  I was pretty wiped out after my c/s but that didn't last very long.  When DS was 5 weeks old, I was definitely in the throes of new-mom-exhaustion.

Ditto.  New babies are exhausting.  Heck, I'm still exhausted by my 8 month old, even though she usually sttn!

  • If it doesn't start improving soon or appears to be getting worse- get your Thyroid levels checked! It's quite common for moms to develop Hypothyroidism after pregnancy. You may also be anemic. If it's going to be a while before you can get to a doctor, you can try taking Floradix Iron & Herbs, available at HEB and Sprouts. Can't hurt.

Post Surgical weakness should not last longer than 1-2 weeks unless there was signifigant bedrest preceeding or following the surgery (not out of bed for any reason for 2 or more weeks.

  • One more possible cause - breastfeeding.  I was exhausted the entire first year, even after I was getting good sleep every night (although its definitely easier after they sttn).  As soon as I quit bfing, I felt so much better.  Make sure you are getting enough protien, fiber and lots of water.
