What to do with fur from dog after LO arrives?

Well...the last post about shoes got me thinking.  We have two dogs...one which is a non-shedding miniature Maltese and the other is a sweet English Labrador Retriever.

The English Lab sheds a TON!  Do any of you have dogs that shed?  We have wood floors and sweep and vacuum at least once a day.

I don't think we could ever get rid of our pup....but I am worried about LO playing on the ground and the fur from our lab.

How will or how have you dealt with this?

TIA!

Re: What to do with fur from dog after LO arrives?

  • I have three small dogs who all shed. I already clean the floors all the time, but I'll be even more dilligent when LO arrives. I can't stand the thought of getting rid of my dogs, I knew I would have children in their lifetime when I brought them home. I guess I'll just sweep my floors ten times a day. I actually want to get the swiffer sweeper vac to try out on my hardwoods.

  • This may sound terrible, and you can all burn me if you choose, but I have a dog and a cat that shed like crazy... I sweep and vaccum every day...  I'm not spending anymore time than that cleaning.  I want to play with LO and enjoy my life not going crazy cleaning!  No child has ever died from getting dirty or hair on them.  My neice goes to my mom's house every day who has 2 cats and a dog, and certainly does not clean every day (maybe once a week sweeps and vaccums)  My niece has been going there since she was 6 months old and been fine.  I think the only thing that will get me more diligent about it is if LO has asthma or allergies or health concerns to make it more dangerous for the hair and fur...  its not a big deal in my opinion.

  • I have two 50 pound dogs who shed - dog hair isn't something I've ever worried about ;-)  A little fur won't hurt baby (and even if you are good about vacuuming, some will get on kiddo).  Some research actually suggests that growing up with pets helps prevents allergies and that living in overly "hygienic" conditions is contributing to the rise in allergies and such.

So, yeah, not something to worry about IMO ;-)

  • If we could sell my dog's fur... we'd be rich. She sheds SO much. I just have to vacuum A LOT...

This exactly.  I plan on cleaning like usual, but I'm not too worried about it.

  • I have two Brittany Spaniels.  They shed, but not a ton.  Right now, I vacuum our house once a week and I don't plan on increasing that after Landon arrives.  I don't have time now and know I won't then, so I'm not going to worry about it!!  A little fur won't hurt!

  • I have 2 dogs that shed and I sweep and vacuum every other day.  Like PP, I won't be doing any more than that.  Plus, the dogs are not allowed in the bedrooms, only the living rooms, and they know that, so the only hair in the bedrooms is the hair we have on our feet.  I'm not worried about it.

  • Shave 'em!

Kidding. Fur never hurt anyone. Shedding is no reason to get rid of a dog, ever, unless someone in the household develops severe allergies or other breathing problems.

I don't plan to do anything much different. Our Lab/Husky mix sheds more than any other dog I've ever met, and that's just how it is. We'll probably vacuum the rugs and swiffer the hardwoods more often. And the dog and two cats stay out of baby's room for at least the first 3 months.

  • I agree with all the other ladies, no big deal! I have a sheltie and she sheds A LOT. I just keep the house clean as I normally would, nothing extra. My son is two & a half and has been crawling around in a house with my sheltie and two cats since the day he was born. He's just fine :)

  • I worried about this too!  Our dog isn't allowed upstairs (where the bedrooms are) and like pp said, a little fur didn't hurt anyone.  Although, I did ask for a Roomba for Christmas....fingers crossed!

  • My baby can eat hair.  I have a Golden Retriever and two cats... hair is on everything and everywhere.  I try to keep up with it.  But, it will never happen.

You think you are going to have more time to clean after the baby comes.... Hahahaa... this is my first - but, I have no illusions about time.  I plan on encouraging my kid to eat dirt too... more immunities.  :)

THIS. We have 2 cats and they shed like mad. But, we aren't clean freaks and HATE to clean! I grew up with animals and it didn't kill me. We'll just "fur-minate" them more often to rid some of the shedding.

  • We have a huge golden retreiver and he sheds all the time.  I sweep, mop and vaccume all the time and thats all I am going to continue to do.  Kinda like the shoes in the house thing, I just clean often.  I am not getting rid of our dog so fur is part of the house, the baby will adjust.

Okay.... now I know I will get super flamed for this but I do not care. This is gross... I can not stand going to peoples homes who have fur everywhere and stuck in their furniture or in the corners of their floors. To see a baby around it is even worse. I am the type who does not like to have dogs lick myself.. babies or any of that. I have a yorkie here and he does not shed much at all but regardless my house is vacuumed daily and mopped every other day. I have someone here to watch Lo or do it for me once she arrives to stay in the habit. I keep my dog brushed & washed frequently, house sprayed with febreze constantly, carpet fresh on thefloor at all times. People who dont know I have a pet dont even know he is around until he comes out of his area. He is not allowed in any room except for where I keep his food in the tiled bath area and the living room... No kitchen, bedrooms,or any furniture. To each its own but pet hair all over babies/kids or near them is gross imo.

You should probably learn to relax a bit - your kiddo is going to get into all sorts of dirt in life - really dog hair is not something to be concerned about.

Honestly, I'd be more concerned about the chemicals in Febreeze and carpet fresh than pet hair...

I am fully aware as to what a kid can get into being that I have a teenage son. I also know that I never left him in an environment to where he could consume pet hair or have it all over him. As mentioned this is MY opinion and if you see it cool to have YOUR child in it then thats great for you I see nothing wrong with wanting to keep myself and children free of pet hair. I would be grossed out to find hair in my food in a restaurant or friends house.... and wouldnt eat at a place that has visible fur/hairs around either. Kids get into things all the time which is understandable its about TRYING to prevent them from doing so. In regards to the febreze and pet fresh if you have suggestions as to something with less chemicals I am open to suggestions. Tia

Meh - I wouldn't say kiddo has ever been covered in pet hair nor does it appear in our food.  But, sure, you are welcome to try to stay hair free.  I would strongly disagree that it's "gross" though to have a bit of dog hair floating around ;-)

If you vacuum regularly, there's really no need to use chemical deodorizers - all they do is spread chemicals and don't make things more sanitary.   Despite having some stray hair, my house doesn't smell like dog (heck my dogs don't really stink as they eat high quality food that keeps them from smelling dog like).  Baking soda works just fine if you feel something needs deodorizing.

Then again my dogs are allowed on the bed and kiss my kid so maybe you don't want my advice ;-)

I didn't say that you were/are a bad person because you let your dogs lick you or your kids. That's on you as I mentioned I don't like it on me or babies (I have witnessed my dog ingesting some of the nastiest things that have come out of him). My son is much older and he does what he pleases and doesn't mind the dog to lick on him. The baking soda sounds like a fine idea. I have only been using it in my fridge. My dog eats holistic dog food (solid gold) & I also didn't know that had anything to do with him not having a "dog smell". I just wanted him to be healthy & have a nice coat. Also... no my dog is not allowed on my furniture he has his own. I don't judge you for anything you choose to do I have my own way of running my house same as you do. I don't go running to the hills at the site of dog/pet hair... I merely clean it (if it's my own pet) and keep myself away from it if I am somewhere that is covered in it.

  • The fur won't hurt your baby.  I have two cats.  I just try to vacuum my floors at least once a week.  I've heard it's actually good for babies to be exposed to animal fur.  I believe I read they have fewer allergies.

  • I have two cats who shed a ton - I have people commenting (who have cats!!) that they shed a lot!!  We will just continue to sweep as necessary!!  To the pp who mentioned the swiffer vacuum, it's pretty good, DH loves it (he is the main floor cleaner Big Smile Yay Me!!!) It does have a pretty small container that holds the dirt/hair so you can't do a large area without emptying it.

We used to have a yellow lab (sadly she and I both fought over alpha-female status and the STRESS of having her never listen to me was too much, plus she liked to snack on my kitties!! - we adopted her out, through our breeder, to a better suited family).  I definitely know about the hair... OMG!!!  I could've swept 20x a day and still not been clean!!!  My normal routine when I had her was sweep with a reg. broom & dustpan, swiffer vacuum, swiffer sweep and then H20 mop... it was a very very long process, and one I do not miss!!!  There is no way I'll have time for that when LO arrives!!!

The chemicals are so much worse than dog hair. It's just hair!! We all have it, what with being mammals and all.

  • I have the EXACT same concerns as we have a huge Shepard that sheds year round. Our house is wood floors also and I know that I won't have time to vaccum or sweep 2 times a day once the baby is born so I decided to get an Irobot Rumba that will do it for me! You can program it to clean certain times and certain areas. It is pricey but in my book it will be a priceless investment!!

Calling people gross for having animals that shed and saying that you "merely clean it", which implies that others don't, is pretty darned judgemental, IMO.

Don't ever, ever get a dog that sheds. Or a cat. Because there is no way you keep the hair elminiated at all times when you have a shedder - like many people in this post made clear.
