Day Care Sticker Shock...Any Advice?

Hi.  I am just over 14 weeks pregnant and recently started looking into day care in my area b/c I will be going back to work after maternity leave.  I called a highly reccommended center yesterday and found out that full time, infant care is $1800 a month.  It is a national day care center.  Granted we do live in the burbs of a larger city but is this the norm for infant care?  I also checked out another center where the price was about $1500 a month.

I will continue my search but am wondering what kind of care most people use?  If it is center based, does that pricing seem normal to you.  Thanks!

Re: Day Care Sticker Shock...Any Advice?

  • Sounds about right.  In our area the cheapest I have found is $100.00 a day, so $2000 a month.

  • Well, that's ballpark for Denver.  FT for our center would be 1700 (we are PT) and at our first choice center would be 1500 (we are on the waiting list).  You can find cheaper, probably, but in my experience, the cheaper options (e.g., I found one FT for 950/month just 5 blocks from my house - that was for FT) might make your skin crawl.

    Infant care is extremely expensive.

  • Doesn't sound bad in your area.  I live at a very LCOL (median household income $40k) and we're paying $1050 per month.
  • In the DC/Baltimore area centers are somewhere around 1500-2000 /mo depending on locations.  So, yeah. .. that sounds about right.

  • Thanks for the info.  I will keep looking around to see what the best options are!

  • Congrats on your pregnancy, looking at your siggy, I can see it;s be a long journey for you.

That price sounds about right. In my area a good accredited center runs about 1000-1300 a month for infant care. We felt a child care center would be best for our needs, but you might look into a private nanny or a home based babysitter, those are usually cheaper.

  • I pay almost that for my two-year old (center).  Under 2 is almost $2K/mo.  Payments next year for two kids are going to suck.  So that's pretty common for metro areas.

  • Ditto Seattle area- that's why we waited to have #3 until DS is going to be in Kindergarten and won't need daycare...  This baby is due in May, he starts K in Sept.  there may be 1 tight month in there.

  • Yep, seems about right.  For here, it's a little less - about $1300/mo, give or take, for centers.

  • Sticker shock is a good way to put it.  I think most people wonder where in the world they will get the money for childcare?  But you will find a solution.  Just hang in there until you find the right arrangement.

    Congratulations!

  • I'm in So Cal and I pay about $1200 a month for a daycare center.  I just wanted to say that your bulldog is adorable!  I have 2 bulldogs and they are great with the baby.
  • Our daycare was $45/ day for DD when she was an infant...that is a Family Daycare though...the centers where upward of $400/ week...

I like the Au-Pair option once you have more than one child or if you keep only running into the $1900 price tag...an Au-Pair will cost you about $350/ week...the upfront cost is somewhat steep however...

You can check out www.euraupair.com for an idea on those costs...

If you choose to go with an Au-Pair I recommend staying away from Cultural Care- I was an Au-Pair with them 10 years ago and they are not a very supportive agency...

  • I'm just outside NYC and pay $1600 a month for full time infant care.
  • 750 a month for infant up to 1 yr. 650 for 1-2 yr and 2-4 yr is 550 4-5 yr is 450 that's at our states top rated daycare and is on one of the nations top rated daycare programs.
  • I'm not sure what daycare you're looking at, but the YMCA in our area runs us $800/month for infant care, which I think is really reasonable for a center.  Cost does definitely vary greatly by location though...good luck!
  • I live in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago and our infant care is 1400/month at a National Chain as well. Prices definitely vary depending on the suburb you are in as well.  Good Luck!
  • sounds about right for a bigger city.  we live in a small city/suburb and the daycare center our LO goes to is considered "the best", so it's on the higher end of the scale, and we pay $171/week (5 full days).
