One Cake or Two?

My B/G twins are turning 2 in a few weeks. I am debating about making one or two cakes.

I am a twin and my mom used to always make us one cake and it never was an issue. But then again, we were girls so we always liked the same things. I am doing a barnyard theme for the bday, so it is a neutral theme. I was going to make an animal cake, but then the neurotic part of me came out and wondered if I should make 2 different ones. Does it really matter at this age? Making too big of a deal out of it? Crazy, I know!

What do you think?

Re: One Cake or Two?

  • I keep it easy by only having cupcakes. :)

(But yes, we sing three times.)

  • I think at the age of 2 you're fine with 1 cake.

My nephew & niece had one cake until they were about 5. After 5 they started to get them two cake. My nephew wanted to have more macho themes.

My nieces started to have 2 cakes this last year, they're 6 now, because they're now starting to assert their individual-ness. No more same/same for them!

  • When they are older, I'd do two but, right now one is completely acceptable.

  • We're making two but only for the typical 1st birthday cake-smashing pictures. Otherwise I think one is fine.

  • My husband is a b/g twin. He always commented that he hated when his mom only got one cake. Now he didn't specify an age when he hated that.

However, I'm always going to do two separate cakes for my twins even though they are both girls. They both have birthdays and are two different people. If they had birthdays on different days, they each would get their own cake then. I don't want them to have to "share" everything just because they are twins and out of sheer convenience. My husband agrees. I want each of them to feel special on their special day no matter what age they are.

This is my personal opinion and take it with a grain of salt. One cake is perfectly fine and there are no issues, but it's just a tradition that we are going to start in our household from the beginning.

  • For their first birthday in a few weeks were getting 3 cakes.  I contemplated that verses one sheet cake and I want them each to have their own, but really.... I think at this age, one is totally FINE!  Less work if your making it yourself.  We're getting ours made from the grocery store, otherwise I'd only make one:)

  • I made a cake for all guests to eat and the boys each had their own cupcakes! :)

  • For their first party they'll both have their own smash cake.  We'll always sing happy b-day 2x.  After that I think we'll always have 1 cake (think about it, you only get 1 cake for future parties that you have to share with everyone else anyway).  IF as they get older they decide they want separate cakes, then I'll do it, but for now they'll share
  • we did 2, but only b.c my dh wanted one kind and I wanted another...

Exactly.  DH and I are cake whores, so we'll take any excuse possible to get as much cake and as much cake variety as possible.

  • I think in the beginning one cake is perfectly fine. My mom is so funny, she actually got them 2 cakes for their baptism (which happened to be on my birthday, she got me a cake too). We were completely 'caked' out. I like peakay's idea with cupcakes - awesome!! We'll definitely have 2 'smash cakes' and a sheet cake for their 1st birthday, then probably 1 cake until they're 4 or 5. We'll see.
