Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Shoe question

When should we switch to hard soled shoes? She has been walking great for about 1.5 months. She is wanting to walk when we go out places and I am just worried about her stepping on something with the soft soled shoes.

TIA!

So excited it is her birthday! Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Re: Shoe question

  • we use hard soled shoes for walking outside and soft soled shoes for indoor use and light outdoor use.  My daughter has Robeez and they say they are for indoor use and light outdoor use only so for that reason we use the hard soled shoes for all other purposes. My daughter has been walking for about 2.5 months if that helps.

  • Here's link from Stride Rite.  We've been buying ds hard soled shoes, because his pt told us it would easier for him to learn in hard soled vs soft soled shoes.

I love their 3 step stages for baby shoes.

  • we haven't switched yet.

DS wears pedipeds that are fine for indoor and outdoor use. and for the amount of time he actually walks outside, i'm not worried about them being worn out very fast.

we don't plan on switching to hard soled shoes until next spring/summer

lol my dr told us the opposite. he said that babies need to feel the floor under their feet to learn how to properly balance. he said hard soled shoes shouldn't be used until LO can walk easily without falling on a regular basis

  • at stride rite they told us to get the regular shoes when DS was pretty confident and steady walking around on his own and was going to be running around outside and whatnot.

at stride rite they have these awesome kind of inbetween ones for early walkers that we had when DS first learned to walk.  They're suuper flexible soles, but they're more protection than the robeez and the like.  we used those until he outgrew them and replaced them with sturdier soles around 15 mos (size 5.5).  he started walking at 11 mos.

LO's pedi also told us this!
