a few ? re: BF new laws/room etc.

I will check back later for responses, TIA.  I will add, I am only 3 nights a week at this place if it effects your answer :)

1. I know the "reasonable" time clause is about 30 mins every 4 hours.  So if you have a 30min lunch period, is this the time you have to use?  I get 2 15mins and a 30 min lunch.  Last night was my first night back, I did 3, 20 mins and pumped at break 1 and 3, 20 mins just wasn't enough.  My job is data entry and production based with strict rules on timing.  I want to know my 'rights" before I bring this issue up.  But I also need a few minutes to eat. Plus, LO is only 6 weeks, i am exploding in pain after 2 hours! What do you think is reasonable here? Do I come in early to allow longer breaks??

2.  Their lacation room they provided me is a BATHROOM.  A nice one at least but still it is a bathroom, they put a chair in it.  AND we all know this is the "go to shiit" bathroom.  There are over 100 employees here and it is a brand new building, lack of a lactation room was a huge oversight IMO.  I don't want to make a stink because it isn't that bad and I am only PT but there are 3 other FT girls that are PG there.  WWYD??  This is a HUGE company with locations nationwide.  On our companies intranet is shows over 50 locations with fancy lactation rooms, they say these are in the "big" facilities.  I consider 140 employees and 3 working shifts a big place, wouldn't you?  How do I bring this up? It is TOP security with cameras in every nook and crany besides the baths, even our food gets examined. I don't see another option without construction but this suucks.....

Re: a few ? re: BF new laws/room etc.

  • It would be wise for you to address the right person in human resources what your rights to BF are in your specific workplace. Compare them with the laws regarding the state you live in. If there is a gap, then you have a good lead. Prepare a statement or proposal on how the lack of space affects not only you and the other BF employees but future employees as well. Explain how unsanitary conditions in a bathroom can contaminate your milk and thus effect your child in a negative way. Also mention how a chair in a bathroom occupied by many women does not give you the sense of privacy YOU NEED to pump, not to mention some people don't want to see you pumping your milk when they go to make a tinkle! If I walked in on a woman pumping (although it is very natural to me) I might be embarrassed for the both of us due to the lack of privacy. I mean hey...there are multiple nursing stations in our local mall, why not at work? Include how a lactation room would benefit the work environment and how other workplaces owned by your company have these facilities. It doesn't have to be this grand room with plush amenities but as a BF mother you do deserve a clean/quiet/private room to express your milk for your child. Perhaps there's a storage room somewhere that could be vamped up?
Calm and well prepared will get you what you want, a few supporters in the work place won't hurt either. If that doesn't work, well give 'em hell honey! Good luck, update us!

  • As your company has over 50 employees, you have the legal right to a space (OTHER than the BATHROOM) to nurse/pump.

You also have a right to breaks, but they can be unpaid.

    Here's a little blurb.
