Question about active duty vs reserves...

DH finally got his acceptance today into the Army OCS program, but was told he was accepted as a reservist instead of active duty.  We aren't sure why?!?  We're waiting to hear back from his recruiter w/ more information, but was wondering, will our family still move w/ DH when he goes away for OCS training?  Also, how easy is it to go active duty once you are in?

 Thanks ladies :)

Re: Question about active duty vs reserves...

  • Right now there are so many applicants that many branches are over-strength. I know of multiple officers that are in the reserves and can't get back on AD, or those that got out completely and have been unable to return to their previous branch. Honestly, completely honestly, I would focus on how your family will handle him being a Reservist instead of AD (where to live, where to work, etc) because the chance of him moving to AD soon after OCS is incredibly slim- or not possible at all.

  • Thank you!  Do either of you know if we will still be moved with DH while he's in OCS school for the next year?

I'm no expert, but I'd be willing to guess the answer is no. He isn't active duty meaning they will not move you into housing that is for AD and their families. You would get separation pay in lieu of being allowed to move. Of course, this is just an educated guess based on my experience with the Army on the AD side.

  • You will not go to OCS itself. When he goes to his branch training(BOLC), if it's over 20 weeks, then it's possible.  It's not a for sure thing and honestly he needs to focus on his work anyway.

  • I don't know if they will move you for his OCS, but even if they do he will be incredibly busy and not have much time (if any) to spend with family. My understanding of OCS is that he wouldn't be able to be at home at night- he will be living in the barracks.

I agree with the above poster that questioned why you would want to move with him- he should be maintaining a residency where he will be living/working after OCS.

  • Do know that while he is in OCS, he will be on active duty orders, so you will have base/commissary privlidges and if you are not with him, he may get a family seperation allowance.  IMO, for initial skills training, it's not a good idea to have your family there...the hours will be murder, he will not be allowed to leave to base for months, and you will have uprooted your family to live in an unfamiliar town where you have no support system.  OCS is not set up to support dependents.  Best to stay put and concentrate on having your kids make cards & record messages for your husband.  Maybe get one of the recordable books from Hallmark and have him read it before he leaves.

Nobody gets PCSed for OCS. As of '04, while he's a BOC (Basic OFficer Candidate), he can't call you, then in the next stage, he gets some calls and there is a mid-cycle picnic, and then for the Senior phase, I think there is more contact, and if you go for the last week or so before grad, you can see him when he's finished.

Ditto on BOLC; it's only a PCS if it's >19 or 20 weeks. FA was, but some branches have shorter training, and then it's TDY. GOod luck!

  • Thanks for the insight, we were just going off what the recruiter told us, which sounds like the opposite of you girls :)  We have a huge list of questions now to go thru with them and hopefully will decide in the next week!
