Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Awful Dr appt re: suspected reflux

A week or so ago, I started noticing that DD was not finishing a whole 4 oz at every feeding and sometimes would refuse the bottle after 2 oz. She would get fussy, gag, swallow hard, and sometimes spit up. I thought it sounded like silent reflux so I called my pedi office on Tuesday (since we were out of town for the holiday). My regular doctor was not in this week so I had to see a diffierent doctor in the practice. When I expressed my concerns, she said that she doesn't believe that babies can get reflux and that the reason LO was eating and acting differently was because I went back to work. WHAT?!?! First of all, I just went back this Tuesday so it started before that. And second, I'm glad that I was not really upset about coming back because the doctor's comments would have really traumatized me! What kind of doctor tells a mother that her going back to work is making her baby sick?!? She also told me that I should only feed her every four hours. Even if she only eats 2 oz and is hungry again 2 hours later. She said just to use the pacifier until it's time to eat again. That's NOT going to happen.

Thank goodness I am seeing my own doctor next week for her 2 month shots. I will certainly be having a conversation with her about this. Sorry for the vent but I left the doctor's office yesterday FUMING. Angry

  • OMG that is horrible and completely inappropriate and wrong. Definitely tell your doctor about this. That other doctor should be reprimanded. What a complete moron. Just goes to show even ignorant @ss holes can get MD's. I would have torn her a new one.

  • I used a pedi years ago that sounded like that and when my favorite retired I switched pedis. So I know how you feel. This pedi told me that my son did not have an ear infection but did not do a tempanagram to check for fluid and my sons ear drum ruptured. So needless to say I know how you feel he also did not believe and day care or heating your house above 65 no joke.

  • I would have been too!! GL with your next appt!

I had a similar experience Monday, I took my DD in because she was coughing and congested and had a bunch of mucus in her throat/chest. The pedi (not our pedi, but another in the practice) washed her hands but didn't thoroughly dry them, so she had COLD, WET hands when she was handling my sick DD. Then, I asked her about teething and she flat out refused that DD could possibly be teething this early. She wouldn't even take a look. I know its not that common, but every baby develops at a different pace so why would teething be a definite 4 months?? ughhh... i know many people who avoid this pedi like the plague, and now i see why!!

  • Wow! What a moron!

I would write everything out that she said so you can give it to your doctor, because she may not hear you or have time to hear you or remember everything you said.
