swaddling after late night feedings

DD is swaddled before going down at 9 pm, but after I unswaddle her to feed her during the night, reswaddling is a pain. She often gets really awake as I do it and then tries to pull her arms out of the swaddle. Thinking of using a sleep sack instead...if you use one, do you leave in on throughout the feeding? (i assume so.) Just trying to make it easier to lull her back to sleep.

Re: swaddling after late night feedings

  • We use the swaddle me. I LOVE it. I take him out to change and feed him at night and put him back in when we rock to go back to sleep. FOr us it is priceless. It's the only way we could swaddle him. He got out of everything else. I would have paid hundreds for it!

  • Do you BF? My trick is to reswaddle her between the 1st and 2nd boob. That way, when she starts to nod off on boob #2, all I have to do is lay her down. I think if I were bottle feeding, I would either leave her swaddled, or re- swaddle when I do the mid-bottle burp, but that may not be realistic.

  • I take her out of the swaddle to feed her because if not she just sleeps and doesn't eat as much. After she finishes eating, I re-swaddle her and then rock her for about 10 minutes (to make sure she doesn't spit up).

  • i am bfing. hadn't thought to reswaddle between boobs...may be worth a try.
  • I use a Swaddleme and don't unswaddle for feedings unless DD needs her diaper changed.

  • We use the Miracle Blanket and I don't unswaddle DS during nighttime feedings.  I don't change him in the middle of the night unless he has pooped which rarely happens anymore.  With DS#1, we switched to the sleep sack around 4 months and that stayed on during nighttime feedings as well.

  • We use the Halo sleep sack and leave DDs arms unswaddled (She's 5 weeks).  We swaddle her before her bedtime feeding.  If she wakes at night to eat (I BF), I change her before I feed her and then reswaddle her to eat.  We only swaddle at night and she seems to associate it with sleeping longer than her daytime naps.  It's been a lifesaver for us.

  • At first she was having a hard time waking up to eat so I would unswaddle her and change her just to get her to wake up a bit before I fed her. Now that's become our routine, although last night her 3am diaper was dry and clean, so maybe I don't need to change her each time. I just worry about her sitting in a wet/dirty diaper.

She is starting to break free of her swaddle, so I'm thinking about trying a sleep sack with the swaddle wrap. I do have to unswaddle her to eat because it's hard to burp her effectively while she's swaddled.

  • I don't unswaddle unless he's starting to break free, in that case I'll unswaddle if he's really fussy. Then I'll change him and reswaddle before the second side. I use Swaddlemes and just use the bottom flap if he needs to be changed.

  • Swaddling has been such a lifesaver for us!  We use the Aiden & Anais lightweight swaddling blankets and are able to get them pretty tight.  It's been the key to getting her to sleep get through those light sleep states at night and put herself back to sleep.  We are getting up 2x each night to nurse and I unswaddle her to change her diaper and nurse her.  She doesn't nurse well when swaddled and I find the positioning difficult, too.  I burp her and let her fall asleep on my chest and when she seems pretty well asleep I get up and swaddle her, then walk laps in the house for 5-10 minutes until she is asleep again.

I try to remember to lay out the swaddling blanket before I start nursing so I can get up and lay her on it without an additional step in between.

  • What I normally do for late night feedings is let her fall asleep laying on my chest (it's the fastest way to put her to sleep for me) and then when she is asleep I try to swaddle her really quick with her swaddleme. If it wakes her up then I just rock her some more and she usually goes to sleep fast because she is still drowsy from being asleep before. I don't keep her swaddled during feedings because I usually have to change her diaper half way between feeding anyways.
Sometimes it's okay to follow. (Picture is a clicky)

This is what I do as well. Works really well for us
