Pregnant after a Loss

F/U to spotting (beta levels mentioned)

My beta levels from yesterday (approx. 5w 6d) were 10,041. If you take my last beta of 280 and round it it to 300, just to make things easier mathmatically, that is pretty much perfect 48 hours doubling. I know that things slow down too, so I guess that is good.

They moved my u/s to tomorrow. Even better.

Also, as an add on to Allison's post about idiot health professionals from yesterday, I have been asking and asking about a Rhogham shot ( I am - and DH is +). I know there is a 48-72 hour window for the shot after seeing blood, and I am hours ways from the 72nd hour. I asked the nurse AGAIN today and she says, "The Rhogham won't stop your bleeding or prevent you from m/c". NO SH!T SHERLOCK. Whether I lose the pg. or not, I don't want even MORE problems.

They aren't letting me get the shot. I am livid.

  • Yay for doubling!

I can't believe they won't give you the shot, that's absurd.  Can you call the office back and ask to speak with another nurse or the doctor?

  • Yay for doubling!!!

I'd call to speak to the dr directly.

  • That's utterly crazy. I would be switching practices over it. They said I needed the Rhogam shot whenever I had spotting this pg.

    Congrats on the great betas!

  • First, that's great news about your betas!

Second, call another OB practice or demand to speak to your doc about the shot.  I swear everybody's health professionals are half brain dead lately!

  • I am not sure if it is neccesary to have shot if you are spotting or bleeding lightly. You did recieve the Rhogam shot after you loss? I believe you only get it at 28 weeks and after delivery. I am not 100% but I am also Rh- and I never recieved one for bleeding or spotting.I was told the shot is for the next pregnancy.

GL and talk directly to the DR! Keep us posted.

  • YAY for awesome betas!  That sucks about the shot, though.  I'd call and demand to speak to the doctor.  There may be some reason that they're not doing it and the doctor may have a good explanation.  Or, the nurse may not have communicated everything to the doctor.  I'm planning on calling and trying to talk to my doctor today as she said no progesterone for me, per the nurse, but the doctor didn't call me back yesterday like I asked.  She's got until 11 before I show up in her office.

But they need to get you the shot. BS on that.

  • great news on the betas!

Can you worm your way in to talk to the dr instead of the nurse?

  • Yay for good numbers!

I'm sorry your having difficulties with your OB office right now. I would definitely request to speak directly with the doctor. If I had trusted my nurses about my test results, I would have never known about my MTHFR and PAI. If the doctor isn't willing to work with you, I'd switch OB's over it. That is ridiculous.

  • My dr only gives the rhogam shot if there is actual red bleeding, not if it's brown spotting.  So, maybe that is your dr's policy too?  I would call back and ask to speak to the dr.

  • Thanks everyone!

I have no idea wtf is wrong with my Dr. The nurse was giving me attitude, chattering on about since I don't have a history of ectopic I don't need it, and yelling that getting the shot won't stop me from m/c. I asked to speak with the Dr. and she basically said no. She talked with whoever was there and called me back. They sent me for bw, which I already did, and thankfully the nurse at Quest is ASAPing it. I have no idea whatr they are looking at, but I always thought any spotting = the shot. The last one I had was the day of D&E for our last loss. And oh yeah, I had to remind the staff I needed it then too.

Whatever happens with this, DH and I decided that I need to switch practices, maybe even to a different health system. I need someone who has better attention to detail and can really deal well with high risk patients. I love my Dr. but she really doesn't deal well with the imperfect. The system is so overloaded now I am just lost in the shuffle.

  • Hooray for doubling betas!  :)

And I'm sorry that you're dealing with Nurse Roadblock.  You should AT LEAST be able to get an educated explanation to ANY of your questions, & if the nurse can't do it, you should get to speak with a doctor.  Period.

As an animal doctor, it drives me INSANE to see how negligent human healthcare "professionals" can be!!!  Client education should be SUCH a high priority.  I'll stop my rant here because it's totally non-productive, but I'm upset for you & everyone else who has to jump through all of these hoops just to get information.  And I am SICK TO DEATH of these nurses who think they're the be all & end all.

((HUGS))  I hope you're able to get answers & GL at your u/s tomorrow!!!

  • OK, so I called back again and got a more competant nurse who explained it is hospital policyn that they must comfirm your blood type befoer administering the shot. Even though they tested my blood type withy DD and DS, you know, just in case it magically changes. That is why I needed bw this AM.

Like I said, 72 hours is aqbout 3 hours away. I told them that that is a ridiculous policy and they are welcome to have my Red Cross Donor card confirming my blood type, and that this policy is leaving them at risk for a legal situation should I be sensitized after this pregnancy, regardless of it's outcome.

That got them moving quickly and I hope to have this resolved shortly.

Also, I am switching Drs. I am out of this health system. Anyone know any good Philly are high risk Dr's that aren't Abington?

  • I actually just got a good explanation that makes sense. Baby's blood typing isn't established until 8w so any shot before that is precautionary. The Dr. is calling me back anyway, and I still may get the shot today.

Also I found out that the u/s tech will not even tell me if the baby has a hb tomorrow. They have to tell the Dr. and then they will call me. UGH

I am so out of this practice.
