I am not 100% sure, but this is what I gather. If you have your own well, and you don't use a water softener, you have hard water. We had our own well growing up. The water without the softener smelled like rust and had a yellowish tent. When mom added the softener, it cleared up the water and no more smell.
If you are on city water system, it is probably soft. I use the Classic Rockin Green because it's in the middle. HTH

We are on city water as well and it's very hard. I just swtiched from Tide to Hard Rock and I love it! I'd call your water dept...it was one quick phone call for me.
