Hospital--what to wear besides gown

I absolutely cannot remember what I wore during L&D with DD!!! I am not trying to look cute at all...just want something practical. I think I wore something under the gown, at least for awhile, but I don't know what it was. I'm pretty modest. I know later on, I was definitely naked waist down and I think maybe all over? and I didn't care anymore, but I"m sure I did care at the beginning and I must have had something on under the gown...or not?

Help?

  • With DD#1 I wore a nursing sports bra under my gown and plan on doing the same thing this time.  If you plan on walking around, you could always bring a light robe with you.

  • I feel like a nursing tank would feel too confining, esp when you are at the peel all your clothes off stage.

With my DD, I wore the nursing gown and nothing else. I was induced and they checked me frequently so the underwear wouldve been pointless anyway. I had another gown I wore backwards if I was standing or anything not in the bed- which wasnt much since I was induced and stuck in bed!

For this LO, I was thinking of wearing a nursing gown and robe I got pretty cheap. Its ugly and falling apart already. At least I wont be mooning everyone :) I might bring a sports bra or something similar to wear in the beginning because I plan to be in and out of the jacuzzi tub.

Just bring a few options and you'll be safe :)

  • I just wore a sports bra for most of my labor.  I was in a tub at first and when I got out, I sat on a yoga ball for about 5 hours with a blanket to keep me warm.  Once we got to pushing I only wore my sports bra, I wanted the room SO warm earlier that I didn't want a hospital gown on at that point.  After DD was born, I took my sports bra off so I could have skin to skin time and attempt BFing so I put a gown on at then.

  • Isn't it funny?  The one time you can walk around with yourself completely exposed and everyone, including you (toward the end anyway), feels its perfectly normal.

I think the hospital makes you strip everything off the bottom; I remember removing my bra but can't remember if they made me.

Nursing tank or nursing bra is a good idea.

I wear the hospital-provided gown during labor and delivery and then switch into my own nursing gown/robe after I take my first shower. I don't usually wear anything under the gown (in fact, they usually ask me to take everything else off).

this. i had an epi and they had me remove my bra so that it wasn't in the way. i wear their stuff to get nasty and after i clean up, i wear my stuff. i like that better for when visitors come. usually t-shirt and pajama bottoms. when i had ds, he went to the NICU and within 10 hours i was showered and dressed in street clothes and shoes. i was on the 7th floor and ds was on the 4th. i went to the cafeteria and stuff  on my own and went to the nicu and back to my room.

  • I wore a sports bra thru my entire labor.  After delivery I stayed in the hospital gown until that night and then I took a shower and put my own nightgown on with my own robe on.  That's pretty much what I hung out in the entire time I was in the hospital.  Brought sweats and a nursing tank (& a sweatshirt) to wear home. GL!

  • I am having a water birth so I plan on wearing only a sports bra so my boobs aren't flopping and floating around.  I will be bringing my robe to wear in the halls as well.

Nursing tanks won't really work for everyone because you will most likely need to have your tummy exposed when you are being monitored.  Typically, most women will have a fetal heart rate monitor and a contraction monitor strapped around their belly.  The monitors are usually held in place with a stretchy band (kinda like a bella band).

  • I didn't even think about what to wear during L&D... but a nursing sports bra is a great idea!  Also a light robe..  I have a thick one I wear now, but think I will invest in a lighter one.  The only thing I had thought about was slip on slippers...  Glad I saw this post!

  • At our birthing class, someone suggested a sports bra and one of those stretchy skirts (made out of yoga-pant kind of material..).  I thought that was a pretty good idea.  You won't need to wear underpants and it would be easy to take off, but you're still free to walk around without showing everything.
  • With my first pregnancy and DS, I went into early labor at 33 weeks and was hospitalized for a few days before delivery. Upon admission to the hospital, the nurse told me to take everything off including my underwear and wear only the hospital gown, so I did. But I was young, scared, and did exactly what I was told, and for the better part of the week wore only the hospital gown. Then on the night I delivered my placenta abrupted, and there was a lot of blood. The nurse on call asked me why I wasnt wearing underwear and when I told her I thought I wasnt allowed they sure had a good laugh. I felt like such a fool! All the visitors I had that week sitting at the foot of my bed and all the times the nurses came in with the fetal monitor, I was so shy about it. Sometimes I wonder if I had any common sense. Lol!

Second time around, I am thinking also a nursing tank under the hospital gown, underwear for as long as they will let me, maybe my own robe from home until the messy part. :)

  • With DS I just wore the regular hospital gown, nothing underneath...and then the next day after I showered I changed into comfy pants and a nursing tank and a light robe.

This time, im using a different hospital and they have these weird looking nursing gowns, and my friend just delivered there and literally her boobs were hanging out the entire L&D, and I hated it. So I am either going to ask for a regular hsopital gown or will wear a comfy nursing bra under it to keep myself from being exposed. After delivery, I plan to wear sweatpants, a nursing tank and possibly a robe or light nursing tee over the tank top! Nothin too spectacular, just wanna be comfy and covered!

  • I found a dress at walmart for like 2 bucks that should go over my belly.

It's a halter so I can just take the neck part off to nurse, and a dress so my lady parts have easy access. I'm not sure if I'll want to wear it, but I think it's a good option if I want to wear something.
