Increase in BM's = Major Diaper Rash

In the past week LO has gone from 1 or 2 BM's a day to 1 almost every 2 hours.  Her bottom is SO irritated. I have tried to keep her dry and I make sure to put alot of ointment on her and let her air out when I can. I am looking for some advice you ladies may have to offer.

We were away on vacation when this started and it seems to be when my MIL recommened we up her ounce intake (she is FF only), so she is drinking a little more.  This may sound silly, but besides the increase in formula could it be because she was out of sorts being in a new place for so long? (10 days)

Also, which ointments do you prefer? I was leaning toward A&D.

Re: Increase in BM's = Major Diaper Rash

  • Use anything with zinc in it & keep a thick layer on her skin. You don't need to totally wipe it off either after each BM, just wipe off the stool. You want to keep a layer of the cream on to protect her skin...

I would let your doctor know too. She could be getting dehydrated & maybe there's another issue going on.

Me: 42, DH: 43. We are so grateful to have a 2yr old daughter, conceived naturally after 3 miscarriages & no treatments (our Dr. gave us 1 more month to try on our own before advacing to IVF, & we conceived her naturally in January 2010)! Trying since April 2011 without sucess....MD said we were both "fine" & that if it wasn't happening, it was a chromosomal issue. Finally started Follistim 225mcg injections with an Ovidrel trigger November 2012. Bleeding 11 days post Ovidrel on November 25th. Starting the whole lab/Ultrasound/Follistim cycle again on November 27th...

  • My pedi recommended adding Maalox to the diaper ointment (I used Desitin) and it works like a charm! You can use any flavor lol, just pour a bit into a ziploc bag, add your diaper ointment and mush and apply. If it does not improve in 24 hours or gets worse take her to the pedi, there is prescription cream available. And like the PP said be sure baby is not dehydrated.
  • Desitin works great for us.  I know it must feel good cause she smiles whenever I put it on her!

  • We were told to use A&D (without zinc oxide) or Aquafor every diaper change. . .We also can't use wipes(boo) and need to make sure he is super dry before we put his new diaper on. I think this is because he has sensitive skin(the no zinc oxide). This, coupled with a prescription has helped quite a bit.
