Has anyone seen a feeding team?

DS had a doctors appointment today and got a referral for a feeding team. It's a nutritionist, OT (who only deals with feeding issues), and speech therapist. Has anyone done this before? What should I expect? He already sees a nutritionist. He saw the OT when he was a month or two old. She helped us a lot. We've managed to work past those issues but not we have new ones.

Background: DS was diagnosed with FTT at the beginning of the month. Now he is almost completely refusing to eat.

Re: Has anyone seen a feeding team?

  • Yes, we have seen a feeding team for the first eval, and now we have a follow-up in January. My son is totally tube fed, so we are working on getting him to orally feed.

I thought the feeding team was awesome! It was so nice to not have to go see a bunch of different specialists about his feeding issues and relay the info to each one. We had a GI doc, OT, GI Psychologist, Nutritionist, Speech Pathologist all there. They initially just went over his medical history and feeding history and they all took notes. Then, they all went in the room next door behind a mirrored window to see how Carter reacted to us trying to feed him. It was like a little kitchen we were in and there were different high chairs to choose from. After they observed, they all met and then we met with the GI doc. He checked over Carter and told us what the team thought about Carter's feeding situation. We then set up a plan for another feeding therapy appt.

Overall, I thought all the specialists and docs were very knowledgable and only wanted the best outcome for my son's feeding situation. This particular team has been doing this for a long time and you can tell. I felt like we finally had some direction to help Carter orally eat...even though it is going to be a long road.

    Hope this helps!

  • I have worked with a feeding team, but as LO is only on a bottle and formula fed I'm not sure the differences once he starts solids.  We worked on different techniques to get him off the feeding tube.  How to wipe his mouth and stimulate sucking.  Its amazing the little things that they do that make such a big difference.

  • My daughter has a feeding team and just completed an intense 6 week feeding program.  She was there Mon.-Fri. from 8-4 and was evaluated, and a plan was put in place by her team.  They all worked with her to find what methods worked best.  It was truly one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.  She's still not eating like a "normal" child, but I can honestly say that she's about 75% better than she was before the program.

After the program is over, her team still will meet with us twice a month to continue helping us with any lingering issues she may have.
