Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Sooo is this colic?

DS is only 4 weeks old so I don't expect him to entertain himself by any means but he is never happy.  As in he nurses, sleeps, and actually likes taking baths in his little tub but other than that he's always fussy.  Never just content.  I try talking to him, laying him down and playing with him (as much as you can 'play' with a 4 week old).  Just in the last few days I've been able to sit with him in my lap and talk to him for MAYBE 5 minutes before he gets upset again.  I don't think he's gassy or anything.  Maybe I'm a boring mommy.  He's even worse for daddy unfortunately...  WDYT?  Anyone in the same boat?  Is this just how they are at this age?  I'm not complaining really, I know infants are a ton of work but I feel bad he's never just happy.

Re: Sooo is this colic?

  • No, that is not colic. Colic is when a baby screams/cries for hours on end without stopping. It's usually in the evenings and nothing you can do will stop it. They think it may be caused by intestinal pain, but they aren't sure. You just have a fussy baby. That's normal and a lot of babies go through a phase like that. It'll get better!

  • A colicky baby cries for more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week and starts within the first 3 weeks of life. Sometimes it's just reflux that cause it, sometimes it's just unexplained. Some babies aren't colic, just high-needs...need to be held often, rocked often, etc. GL.

  • Okay those sound awful.  I'll take my fussy boy!  I'm sure he'll outgrow it
  • I just posted about this recently...my DD is exactly the same way at 6 weeks. We ended up taking her to the pedi and she has a lot of symptoms of reflux (going from sleeping to crying instantly, arching her back and neck while crying, excessive hiccups, increased spitting up, happier only when upright). So we are trying out some meds...I'm hoping this makes her happier during the day.

This. R was diagnosed with colic by his pedi, but we suspected gas was more of a culprit. We got him some Colic Calm and he's able to STTN... But, of course, we having uncontrollable fits of screaming that would make it hard for him to breath sometimes!

Try snuggling your LO, it always helps.

  • Mine was the same way however there were many time periods of crying and so yes my pedi told me it was colic and to just try everything.  I love the informational pamphlets they give on this ... try this and this oh and if it doesn't work then they just cry.  My LO is now starting to get much better.  At about 2 months he then started to like and be comforted by me holding him and playing with him.

Oh and it really sucks when people ask about your baby too :(  They all say oh how is the baby?  Well he's fussy and screams all day ... thanks.

    Hang in there.

  • My son is only 9 days old and is the exact same way! Although, he has some of the symptoms LKate5 described in her reply so now I'm thinking it may be due to reflux. We have an appointment with his pedi on Friday so I'll talk to him about it.

  • This is us too...it really sucks, but you just have to hang in there.  We are trying out some meds for reflux, but not much luck yet.  Some days I just feel like I'm going to go insane, but then I remember that she will grow up so fast, and this will be a distant memory before we know it.  Good luck!!
