XP helmet mommies

Do you have a helmet or Doc Band?  We just got a helmet from Hanger.  We saw our PT today and she thinks we should go down to Cranial Technolgies and possibly look into getting a Doc Band instead.  Basically she said our helmet is a POS and was poorly made...   The thing doesn't even fit her head, when the clinician was taking the cast of her head he f-ed it up when she was removing it.  I'm so confused...  Any insight would be appreciated

Re: XP helmet mommies

  • We had a great experience with our Hanger helmet. Our orthotist used a scanner, rather than making a cast, though. Any helmet is going to leave some red marks and need adjustments-- both at first, and as the child grows.

What is your LO's condition-- plagiocephaly, brachiocephaly, etc.? Ours was for plagiocephaly.

I would suggest calling the Hanger office, and showing someone higher up the helmet. I am pretty sure they will want to correct the situation. I am surprised they did a cast, rather than using the scanning technology.

I understand what you are going through, because we went through it with a local company who made DS's first helmet. We wasted a good 6 weeks trying to make that one work. Whatever you decide, I would move quickly because there is a limited window of plasticity in the skull.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

  • She has plagio with tort.  Her face is distorted from the plagio.  We have an appt with Cranial Tech next week to see what they say and go from there I guess.  How frustrating.  I know plagio isn't really considered special needs but I thought I might get some answers on this board.  Thanks for your input!

  • I am sorry that you are having trouble with your helmet.  We had a very good experience with DS's helmet.  It was custom made by a local orthotics place from a cast made of DS's head.  We had to get it adjusted a few times in the first couple of weeks.  After that, we went monthly and never had problems with redness or marks.  We didn't really get a choice about the type of helmet; this was what the surgeon prescribed.

This is what the helmets look like:
