Hawaii Babies

LOL

A friend of mine has a little girl, a bit over 1.5 years old. We just discovered that although she knows my sons' names, she doesn't have them quite right.

She calls them "Will" and "Andash".

I cracked up laughing because it makes a LOT of sense since we always say "Will and Dash" to her while pointing to them - so yeah, I can see where she got that. Stick out tongue

P.S. Total side note: my boys regularly play with 3 kids under the age of 3. Interestingly, all three children have absolutely no problem telling the boys apart, but their parents often still get them confused. I'm sure there's some interesting scientific or developmental point there...

Re: LOL

  • That's hysterical!

I wonder why the kids can tell them apart but the parents can't - maybe the kids see the personalities more?  That's interesting.

  • That's totally cute!
  • LOL, that's sooo freaking cute!!!

Wow, it's interesting. I do feel like LO pays more attention to details--or notice things in a new room that I won't pay attention to right off the bat. I think it might be because they're not molded/shaped by much yet (like us and our own preferences/frames of reference/etc) so they're more open to "seeing" more things? So maybe something along the lines of that is the reason why the kids can tell the twins apart?

I was wondering something similar. Maybe we've grown so accustomed to seeing faces (generic eyes, nose, mouth, etc.) that unless someone has something unusual like we find them really attractive or they have an eye patch, we don't really see individual faces - at least not to remember - without an effort. Maybe to young children, everything is still so new and unique that those individual differences are a lot more memorable?

  • That's super cute about their names and so interesting that kiddos can tell them apart better than adults.  Wonder why? Someone should do a study!

Speaking of twins and names...when I was about 2 years old I asked my grandma why she didn't call us "our other name"...she wasn't sure what I meant. I guess everyone in the family used to call us "The Twins" and she always called us by our first names and I was confused by it. Too funny!  I am pretty concious of calling LO by her name and not "The Baby"...especially since her nickname and baby sound quite similar, especially to a new little one just learning language.

Interesting you say this, because one of the major things that twin parenting books say these days is to be sure to use individual names vs a "unit" name (I have to admit we're still guilty of saying "the boys" Embarrassed).

And saying "The Baby" reminded me - one of my cousins and her husband constantly called their son that when he was born, and it got to be such a habit that when he was three, they were STILL calling him The Baby! So now I'm very conscious of saying that lol.

  • haha, i love this post.  and yes - super interesting that the kids can tell them apart better than adults!
